Elisa Lam Mystery
« on: January 20, 2015, 10:35:24 PM »
Hello all,

Just thought i would post this up to see if anyone had any theories as to what happened. Elisa Lam, a Chinese born, Canadian student was found deceased and naked in the water tank on the roof of the Cecil hotel. Her body was discovered when residents complained of foul tasting water! Here is a link to a website which gives a bit of depth to the case http://vigilantcitizen.com/vigilantreport/mysterious-case-elisa-lam/

Her post mortem showed that her body contained no traces of drugs or alcohol. What makes this such a bizarre mystery is the last footage of her in the hotel before she disappeared. You can view it at the page linked above or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TjVBpyTeZM

I have my own down to earth theory but would love to hear of others.

Apologies to Mods in advance, wasn't sure where to post this!

Having previously studied the Elisa Lam case (with thanks to and help from two friends), I'm fairly sure that her death was either an accident or suicide as a result of a mental disorder (she was bipolar and suffered from depression) for which she was receiving medication, rather than because of anything more sinister or paranormal. The post-mortem report (attached) indicated no sign of foul play such as strangulation, physical or sexual assault - only death caused by drowning.

Several photos of a woman part-submerged in water and two rooftop dancers were posted in one of Elisa Lam's blogs, giving some idea of the way her troubled mind was working...

Her body had to be extracted by Los Angeles firemen from a hole cut in the side of the ten foot high water tank after it was drained...

LAFD removing Elisa Lam's body...

Drawing of the Cecil Hotel 14th. floor showing the lift lobby and fire escape stairs (bottom left) to the rooftop which Elisa Lam is thought to have used to reach the water storage tanks...

First, I don´t know this case at all - only heard about a dead body found in a water tank, that´s all.
Thanks for the video. It is eerie.
Elisa Lam does look like someone with mental issues in that footage (or someone on drugs, but we know she wasn´t.) It looks as if she is playing some kind of game where she imagines she is being followed. If she really was being followed, she wouldn´t have stepped out of the elevator and she wouldn´t have been communicating - which she seemed to be doing with those strange hand movements. She would keep standing in that corner of the elevator, waiting for the doors to close, hoping that whoever was after her wouldn´t make it.
She does seem playful - and bored however strange that may sound!

I think it was an accident, but how did she get into the tank? Surely such tanks are closed with heavy lids. Anyway, I HOPE so!!! Birdshit comes to mind! How on earth did she get in?

Now I will have to look into this case!

A couple of links to one of Elisa Lam's blogs. You might need to highlight to read...

Hi Myster,

Thanks for all the added photos, maps and details. I assume you know of the outbreak of tuberculosis and the test being called the Lam Elisa after her body was discovered. Very bizarre coincidence or something a bit more sinister?

Abs, Agree with your observation about hide and seek. That is what i thought. My conclusion is that she had taken some sort of hallucinogenic drug, played hide and seek with something in her head and climbed into that water tank. I think she remained alive in there long enough for the drug to work its way out of her system, hence it not showing up in the post mortem. Its an odd case and the video is eerie as you say.

I hadn't heard of this case.

It seems to me she is trying to activate or deactivate the sensors to get the lift to move by moving in and out and waving her hands about etc?  Lifts usually have sensors to prevent them closing on anything or anyone around the doors?

There appears to be two operating panels.  The one she is pressing is fairly low so much so she has to bend and she doesn't look very tall.  Lift panels are usually at waist level based on typical adult height.  What was the higher panel for?  Why would the manufactures place the operating panel so low users have to bend?

Just my opinion of course but Jeremy Bamber is innocent and a couple from UK, unknown to T9, abducted Madeleine McCann - motive unknown.  Was J J murdered as a result of identifying as a goth?

The elevator works after she goes out and it is "left alone". It moves and goes to the floors she "programmed" it to do.
Maybe the panel is so low so that children and people in wheel chairs can reach it?

Have read a little bit about the case. Elisa Lam was found naked in the water tank. Her clothes were in the tank, but not on her.

WHAT a weird case!

How did she close the lid to the water tank once she was in, which seems difficult enough in itself? Or wasn´t it closed, but the fact was covered up?

Edit to add a strange little thing. There is a Tuberculosis diagnosis test, which is called Lam-Elisa.
Elisa Lam´s body was found on Feb 19. 2013. Here is an article from  Feb 22. 2013 about an outbreak of TB a few blocks from Cecil Hotel.
Probably totally unrelated, just an odd little fact. http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/02/22/us-tuberculosis-losangeles-idUSBRE91L13Z20130222

Cecil Hotel lift buttons...

There's no 13th. floor for superstitious reasons.  Elisa was pressing each button in turn (probably 10, 7, 4, M, B), to make the lift stop at each lower floor, then the door hold for a delay, before she finally left the lift.

I think the tank had a hinged lid at one stage so making it easy for her to open it, which was removed by LAFD to aid recovery of the body through the opening. But then they decided to cut a hole in the tank's side, because the first method proved too difficult or unpleasant (and was in full view of TV/press cameras)...

A wooden step-ladder was left leaning against the tank, probably by hotel maintenance staff, so enabling Elisa to climb on top.  According to reports the tank was half to three-quarters full when she was discovered, ie. above 5ft. deep. Elisa was 5' 6" tall so probably had to tread water once she had let herself down into it. When she realised there was no way to reach up to the opening and her clothes became waterlogged, she removed them to make it easier to swim/move about. Overcome by exhaustion with trying to keep afloat she let her head become submerged and drowned.
It's one of them cases, in'it... one of them f*ckin' cases.

Hello Abs

But does the lift actually move?  And if it does is it because someone called for it from another floor?  Or because it moved as per Elisa-Lam's instructions on the control panel?

When Elisa-Lam moves in and out the lift there appears to be something that looks like a letter hanging out of a letter-box opposite.  I don't think it is a letter/box but that's the best way I can describe it.  When she moves out the lift and the doors close and re-open the letter ? has gone but is this that things have moved slightly and the camera doesn't detect it?  When it shuts and then re-opens on the second occasion the outside of the lift (corridor?) looks the same with the appearance of the letter hanging out of a letter-box but it is in colour ie the walls are a bright orange?

PS I forgot...I haven't read about the history of the hotel to know its age etc but the lift looks small for a hotel.  They are normally fairly large to accommodate luggage and those huge trolley things the cleaners have.

I guess small children shouldn't be in a lift unsupervised.  And the entrance looks so narrow I am not sure it would be wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair?

Will have a look again and look for the "letter". I think the colour difference is due to different colours of the walls on different floors.

OK watched it again - different floors for sure.

Elisa appeared to press buttons veritically and not horizontally?  The buttons to close and open the lift are horizontal.  Is it known what is on the panel higher up and also the white things above the second panel?

That's what I said -  vertically 10, 7, 4, M, B or maybe 12, 9, 6, 3, L .. then "door hold" which is timed for a fixed number of seconds before it shuts and the lift starts to descend, hence the different colour (orange) of the lift lobby at the end of the video. If Elisa thought she was being followed by security staff because she had opened the rooftop security door and set off an alarm, then it might have been an attempt to delay their approach. On the other hand she just might have been playing hide-and-seek with an imaginary partner. At first when she steps out of the lift it looks like she's counting down with her arms, then shortly after begins to bend back the fingers of her left hand to "crack" them. Her right knee bends with the effort. But I think she was just hallucinating though, talking to an imaginary friend, perhaps through missing her medication. She seems obsessed with getting onto rooftops... there's an earlier photo on her blog taken from the roof of a high building in Canada, and of course the picture of two rooftop dancers above.

Not sure what the panel above is, unless it had keyed buttons for staff/emergency use only.
It's one of them cases, in'it... one of them f*ckin' cases.

Is it known which floor she is on when the footage starts?
Is it correct that her room was on the 4th floor?
