In general tabloids take a story from a source or other paper and embroider it. You can identify from where stories have been borrowed by the embroidery they have.

In the Swiss case, the Swiss police point out that they didn't say the culprit had been in Portugal and there doesn't appear to be a source for that statement. The tabloids said she had been sexually assaulted but a retrospect a year later said there was no evidence of it. It's what sells copy rather than accuracy.

Which raises another question ... if there was no evidence of sexual assault on Ylenia but evidence of poisoning (apparently with a substance which produces disorientation ~ stupor ~malleability if memory serves me correctly) was Von Aesch a paedophile, I have seen no convictions for that, or was he a procurer?
I believe he had a conviction in relation to a threat to kidnap a small boy.
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

Such denigration of a Police force! Anyone would think we lived in a country where our police were beyond reproach. Do our police carry out perfect investigations or do they make the same mistakes time and again?

We're supposed to read G-Unit's link and be chastened by the fact that there are piss poor police in the UK too, as if that cancels out the PJ's mistakes in this case, or somehow excuses them.  Seen this done a thousand times before, it's tiresome.

As much as unsubstantiated reports that the PJ didn't follow leads, in my opinion. Leicestershire police have been shown to have had enough evidence to prosecute Janner and didn't. That's not a mistake, it's deliberate. I find it quite hypocritical to criticise the PJ and ignore the parlous state of our own police. Leicestershire Constabulary were heavily involved in the PJ investigation remember. Hopefully they were more diligent than in the Janner case, but we'll never know because unlike the Portuguese, who have been criticised for their judicial secrecy, our Police Forces don't publicise case files so we can criticise their mistakes.

So would you prefer it if, every time, I preface any criticism of the PJ with"whilst I concede that British police are far from perfect..."?  Would that be better or would you be able to take it as read that I have never claimed that the UK police are above criticism either?

The PJ's biggest mistake was not failing to test the twins for sedation nor was it failing to examine a van in Switzerland. It was failing to thoroughly investigate Madeleine's famliy and their friends and eliminate them from the investigation.

It would be very foolish to presume that they haven't.

I have seen nothing to uphold that statement.
