Well for a start the abductor could have opened the window from outside, Madeleine woke up and ran out of the apartment.   You have to look for a missing person you don't just say 'oh I know what happened'.  It's instinct to look.
Exactly, and her and her abductor might still have been in the near vicinity and therefore it would have made perfect sense to go look around the area.

How many of the Tapas 7 mentioned the open window in their first statements, Vertigo?
What was they're actual accounts after the alarm was raised? did they all run to 5A along with Gerry?
What route did they take? did any of them pass the open window and enter by the front door?
In other words, what were they aware of or told by Kate and Gerry before they split up to search for Maddie?
In other words were they aware of the open window before they went to look for Maddie?
