Closets in the US are often considerably larger as standard than in the UK or those in a small holiday apartment.
Madeleine had a very limited number of hiding places in 5a after ruling out her own bedroom. She also would have no means of calling for help from any hiding place.

No idea Merc. If someone opened the shutter and window from outside, this is just estimating what behaviour might result during the following seconds.

Doesn't the fact that :
A. Kate changed her statement in almost every particular from her May 4th statement to the 10th of May timeline,
B. Gerry also changed his statement to avoid having to go past an open window,
C. Not one of their friends, 3 in total, saw the open window which would have been lit, through the open bedroom door,  by a small lamp in the living room,
Give you any cause for doubt ?

If the open window/shutters was a major part of a cunning plan by the McCanns  and was intended to be their (only) evidence that someone had entered 5A - don't you think they would have made sure the window/shutters WERE still open when the police arrived? - or at least pre- arranged with one or more of their friends to say they had definitely seen them open immediately after Madeleine disappeared (if you believe their friends colluded with them)?

Why would Gerry destroy his own plan to convince the police that a stranger had broken into Madeleine's bedroom?

That makes no sense to me.
