In this case I think you're probably right, but it doesn't always follow...you can tell alot about a person by the company he keeps, but no one could accuse the McCanns of seeking out Clement Freud and developing any sort of regular sustained contact with him - or could they....? &%+((£

They did indeed cancel, although it was before they were formally declared arguidos. It was on the evening of 3rd September when Ricardo Paiva informed them it was imminent;

Our plans for the evening went out of the window. We cancelled an interview we were scheduled to give Paris Match and dinner with Clement Freud.

They still went to see him though;

At 9.50pm, I rang Clement. ‘Come on round,’ he said. ‘It’ll be nice to see you. But you’ll have to forgive my night-time attire.’

His wife has apologised, why she did so, I've no idea.  I have not seen that these allegations were made while Clement Freud was alive and able to defend himself.

I find it puzzling that no-one came forward at any time during his political career, in 1987 when he received his knighthood or when his association with the McCanns became known.  It hasn't been a secret, certainly on the internet although I don't know if there were press reports at the time.  It is mentioned in MADELEINE.

Like Shining I would err on the side of caution and refer to the claims as allegations.

I have no issues with facts being published on this.  Equally, since UK law permits aspersions cast against recently dead people, I have no issues there.  (Actually, I do, but the forum rules permit it.)

I do not know whether his wife is alive or not.  I certainly don't know if she has admitted to anything.  And I have yet to see anything proving the police have been informed.

It would be helpful if posters stuck to facts that can be supported.  But speculation, inference and guilt by association is going to hit the delete button.

Was his widow really apologising to the women? Does that mean she believes their stories?
