Gonçalo Amaral claimed that the e-fits were effectively a ruse created in order
to discredit the Smith sighting and were not based on the Smith recollections.

Gonçalo Amaral reveals that key testimony was undervalued at the time of disappearance

Key witness identified the father of Maddie.   Gonçalo Amaral reveals that key testimony was undervalued at the time of disappearance. The testimony of one of the Smith family members who identified Gerry McCann as the man who saw the night of the disappearance of Maddie carrying a child in her arms the way to the beach [Light] was devalued after I leave the case. "It's a lie that the portrait e-fit that the British police released is now based on the testimony of the Smith family."

"The statements are Gonçalo Amaral, former coordinator of the PJ who investigated the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, the Correio da Manha. And come in following the pictures robot disclosure by the Scotland Yard pointing one of the drawings as the main suspect in the alleged abduction of the English child, the May 3, 2007 - who claim to have been made based on the testimony of an Irish family vacationed in Praia da Luz when Maddie disappeared.

"The Smith family told us what they saw that night. A man, alien, athletic, burned face from the sun, like the tourists, and hid his face not to be seen with a blonde child in her arms,"said Goncalo Amaral. "Shortly thereafter, when the McCann family ' fled 'to the UK, and were greeted at the airport by TV, a Smith family member called us, very distressed. Gerry [father of Maddie], which was off the plane, was the man that Mr. Smith had seen carrying a child that night," explained the former coordinator. For Gonçalo Amaral, "there was a positive identification, which was set aside." "The McCanns hired detectives who made a picture, a man like Gerry, to devalue the testimony," he said.

A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.
Indeed, the truth never changes with the passage of time.

That phone call probably can't be confirmed either.  It sounds a bit like Trump saying if Clinton wins the election it was rigged, but you can guarantee if he wins the election was fair.
The more I look into this case Goncalo seems to have been at fault.

It's good that Mr Smith's wife Mary is on record (in clear and plain English) as saying that the Smiths stand ready to help the McCanns in any way they can in their quest to find Madeleine.

Portuguese libel-law (probably) allows Amaral to get away with such (libellous) guff.

Mr Amaral is correct. The phonecall at 10:55am on 20 Sept 2007 was documented by the british police Robbity.

I don't question that one.

WOW!!    I missed that article probably because the main thrust of it wasn't correctly reflected in the article heading.   That puts a whole new perspective on Smithman if true.

Take it one step further and it is obvious to me why the e-fits were withheld in the beginning.

Has Martin Smith been gagged from talking about his sighting??

I agree with Mr Amaral, the two Crimewatch efits were not made not by members of the Smith group IMO.

DCI Redwood said they were. Henry Exton said they were. Amaral wasn't in the loop by then.
Do you believe Redwood deliberately lied or failed to check with the Smiths before going on camera?

Do we have a direct quote from Mr R himself (not quotes from a from a crimewatch narrator please) stating that the efits were done by members of the Smith group?

If the 2 efits were both obtained on a visit by the Oakley outfit to Donegal, why are the two efits produced by two different technologies?

Contrary to what Mr Amaral says about the importance to the investigation of what the Smith family said they saw on their way home is Mr Smith's opinion of the value attached.
The sighting did serve some purpose insofar as it enabled Mr Murat to be eliminated as the carrier. The three Smith statements confirm the inability to provide any other identification nor even to recognise anyone from photographs.

Mr Amaral's interest in the Smith sighting was piqued only when Martin Smith wrongly identified Gerry McCann as the carrier.  If he claims that the Smith information was devalued he is the man who will know the answer as to exactly why that was.  It all happened on his watch.

Snip
Speaking from his home in Drogheda, Co Louth, Mr Smith said that the Portuguese police did not seem to think his sighting was significant.

He added: “It looked as if they put 90% credence on the Jane Tanner sighting, maybe that wrong-footed them and they didn’t take our sighting as seriously. I was surprised it took six years to rule out the other sighting.”

He said he has met with Scotland Yard detectives twice over the past 18 months to help them with the new probe. He added: “We‘d all love to see the police get to the bottom of what happened.”

“We think about Madeleine a lot and we would love to see a conclusion to this case.

"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

I knew you'd come back with that comment. Do you think Crimewatch broadcasted a statement which could have potential legal repercussions for either them or the Smiths?
Is it your opinion that at least one of those efits was formulated from another anonymous witness & bears no relation to Smithman (but could be an image of someone seen by Crecheman & his family in the vicinity of 5a?

@Misty this contains a lot of guesswork but IMO one of the efits may be by a different witness who according to a CdM press report saw a walking man talking on a mobile phone carrying a child, probably west or southwest of the smith sighting. Of course the press report may be incorrect.
Translated "The woman saw him speaking in English on the phone, as he passed, carrying the child"

How would Exton have got hold of that witness's details back in 2008? Nothing about this was leaked to the media at the time & there is no reference to it in the released files. Surely DCI Redwood would have said a second witness saw a man fitting Smithman's description plus a child in a different location - but there was nothing.
