.....
Other people's mtDNA was present in one or two hairs only.

No matches were found between the McCann's or their friend's mtDNA and samples found elsewhere than G5A [with one exception, Jane Tanner].
...

...

mtDNA has been used in US courts, so not entirely irrelevant it seems.

How would Jane Tanner's hair or DNA have got into apartment G5A?

It didn't but it could have, she went in there to tell the police what she had seen. Two hairs with identical mtDNA to hers were found in the Burgau apartment, as was mtDNA identical to Murat's. That means that two people with the same maternal bloodline as those two were at that apartment.

It doesn't quite mean that does it?

OK I missed which apartment you were referring to.

Not necessarily, seemingly There are several maternal bloodlines in the database consulted concerning JT at least. Eight identical ones, in fact. Perhaps there was a familial connection at some time back in antiquity or even pre-history, but from what I can gather, it doesn't necessarily involve any connection within a specified time span of recent familial history.

Nor does a stray hair found somewhere mean that the owner of the hair actually stood on the spot or even in the near vicinity of the place it was found

A PT cop happened to share the same haplotype as Kate and the children, yet there is no noted familial connection between them in the files...

It doesn't eliminate the possibility either, of course.

No, it doesn't. But I can just see some of the [ censored word ] community attempting to present the idea that Kate & the children and a PT cop happened to share the same haplotype as yet another troooo fact somehow proving their kinship in the latest twist in some conspiracy theory or other.

Those maternal ribosomal DNA lines can stay constant for up to 10,000 years, so a lot of mix ups can occur over an extended length of time.

Could the topic be changed to allow us to discuss something? "british police stop forensic work" doesn't really lend itself to much discussion.
