Madeleine McCann detectives may apply for more Home Office funding for 'outstanding work'

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann have "outstanding work" left to do on the inquiry and may apply for more Home Office funding.

In April, then-home secretary Theresa May granted the team £95,000 to keep the investigation going, with the cash expected to last until October.

On Wednesday, Scotland Yard said it would talk to the Home Office about funding.

A force spokesman said: "Whilst there remains outstanding work on this case, the Metropolitan Police Service will remain in dialogue with the Home Office regarding the continuation of funding."

The British investigation, Operation Grange, was expected to be wound up after Scotland Yard boss Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said in May that British investigators had one remaining line of inquiry to follow and unless any new evidence came to light the probe would finish.

This came seven months after the investigation team was scaled back drastically to just four officers.

Earlier this month, the Sunday Mirror also reported that forensic investigations by the team had ended.

Madeleine vanished at the age of three while on holiday with her parents in Portugal in 2007 and, despite a high-profile international hunt, no trace has ever been found.

Hopes were high when the UK investigation into the little girl's disappearance was launched in 2011, with Scotland Yard detectives later highlighting a sex offender who had targeted British families with young children staying in villas in the same area where Madeleine was last seen.

Despite no obvious progress since then, earlier this year the head of Scotland Yard's murder squad, Detective Chief Superintendent Mick Duthie, remained optimistic.

He said: "There is ongoing work. There is always a possibility that we will find Madeleine and we hope that we will find her alive."

This could be another non story- SY are always consulting home office re funding yeah? and? we all know that already don't we?...So,anyhoo now the olympics are over we need to read new rubbish to fill white space on our web pages...September: we have the obligatory annual Diana queen of Hearts More secrets to be unleashed fest. and so Maddie Story gets in first.  I think the family should now take over  the search because like those pesky sardine munching Portuguees cops who didn't find Maddie, those pesky SY are just as bad - but a bit more expensive.

The police chief admitted detectives did not have a “full understanding” of what happened to Madeleine or why she was taken but added: “That is why the work continues. “

He told the Standard: “There is a missing girl and if she has been murdered and if we think we have got justifiable and reasonable lines of inquiry to pursue then they should be dealt with.”

Smithman and Smellyman still haven't been identified... at least as far as the general public is aware.

Even if there is just one officer left on the case to identify Smellyman and his attacks on UK children (or any other viable lead of someone else).... what do people object to? These families deserve closure of some sort as well.

ETA: There may be a connection to the Madeleine case, or perhaps not. But these are also families with no answers.

Whatever one thinks of the McCanns, why on earth shouldn't at least one officer or more - if necessary - continue to review any incoming evidence of who at least Smellyman may be for the sake of the other families?

Smithman and Smellyman still haven't been identified... at least as far as the general public is aware.

Even if there is just one officer left on the case to identify Smellyman and his attacks on UK children (or any other viable lead of someone else).... what do people object to? These families deserve closure of some sort as well.

Don't you think that if there are active leads to be followed in a missing child case they should be until all are eliminated?

Of course they should follow it thru to the very end of their leads.  No point in finishing with say 5% not investigated.

Maybe they know who did it and now simply have to collect enough evidence to prosecute?

Identifying Smithman with a view to eliminating him should have been a priority a long time back when Redwood had his eureka moment.
