The OC staff were questioned as witnesses. In Portugal, witnesses cannot be asked leading questions but they are obliged to answer any question truthfully.
RM was questioned as an arguido. As such, the questioning could be leading but equally he was permitted to know what evidence the police had to justify suspicion.
So that still doesn't sort out lies from truth.

The investigating team seemed to be of the opinion that all the lies emanated from the Tapas 9 & no-one else (despite obvious evidence to the contrary).

All this about keys and we already know the apartment was UNLOCKED...
The only hidden entrance, THE FRONT DOOR, was LOCKED.

The patio door was unlocked, but closed, and virtually the whole patio area which was illuminated, was in close view of the Tapas group from only 50 metres away.

Even Amaral stated that no-one would go in that way with the group so close and overlooking it..

But only the back door.
As I recall the theory is the abductor bootlegged the key to the front door and made his entrance then opened the windows and shutters to give the old bill a bumsteer then went out of the front door, with the child, closing the door behind him.
Having been casing the joint all week and failing to notice the back door was always left open............ &%+((£
One really would not want him on one's team would one?
Trouble is Alice, even Amaral knew better than you

... and he said that NO abductor/intruder would go in by the patio/back door because it was so close to the Tapas group (50 metres approx) and also well illuminated by the street lamp immediately opposite.

Seems the person casing the joint understood this too.

Despite what he said in his previous statements, he states now and with certainty, that he left with KATE by the rear door which he consequently closed but did not lock given that that is only possible from the inside. Referring to the front door, while he is certain that it was closed it is unlikely that it was locked as [because] they had left by the rear door.

Smithman carrying a child in his arms checked his watch after passing the Smith family and the time was 10:03. Both are still unidentified 10 years later.

He means it was unlikely it was double locked.  The front door automatically latches itself when closed, meaning a key would be needed to open it.  So if closed it was locked ... single locked.

So was Kate lying when she said she left the door unlocked. or was she being stupid by not explaining they left the door single locked as apposed to double locked ? Or what was GERRY trying to say"all the doors were locked one was only single locked"?

Yawn

.... she meant that she did not put the key in the lock and turn it .... but it automatically single locked when closed .... needing a key from outside to unlock it.   It was NOT DOUBLE locked, but it was SINGLE locked, needing a key

But if the burglars have a key it doesn't matter two hoots whether it is double locked or single locked they still can open it.

IMO, they just wanted the case settled, "another notch on their guns" .... and were not prepared to look at anything but The Mccanns dunnit.

Only liars would expect honourable people to keep lying IMO.  They just do not understand that many/most people are honest.  As we all know Amaral was a Court proven liar.

Exactly  8((()*/

and with a key they can often open and close doors without even touching the door.
