That comment was made in the context of the intruder who had sexually assaulted many UK children in their beds.    Anyone who thinks he was in any way pointing a finger at the McCanns is allowing their wishful thinking to get the better of them IMO.

That may be the case.    However Mr Smith made a point of threatening legal action against newspapers which had misrepresented him.   

As it is such a massive claim for the Times to make about him, then I do not believe he would have allowed the claim to go unchallenged if it was all a huge lie.      However, no retraction or apology was ever made by the Sunday Times regarding that statement.   That is strong evidence IMO that no complaint was ever received by them.

You are talking about two different things. An official signed statement and an unconfirmed newspaper report.
