What did he get for shoplifting?

An apology it would appear.

'In August 2009 we said that Mr Exton was guilty of shoplifting and that he was sacked as a result.
Although he was cautioned, we accept that the caution was rescinded. He was not sacked and continued to work until he decided to retire. We apologise for the error.'
Brietta posted on 10/04/2022 “But whether or not that is the reason behind the delay I am certain that Brueckner's trial is going to take place.”

Let’s count the months, shall we?

Who cautioned him?  And did he prove his innocence?  Or was there just insufficient evidence?

There could be a confidential story behind all of that.

Possibly for breaching a D Notice by naming a State employee who stole a bottle of duty free perfume from a shop in Manchester airport while working at his day job as a 'spook'.

The police were called and given the option of the offence being dealt with under caution or being prosecuted ... he chose the former.
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

I'm still waiting to hear about all the outstanding work Exton did on the Madeleine McCann case that helped move the case on significantly, what with him being so brilliant and all.

I certainly would not accept a caution in these circumstances.....its an admission of guilt and he would know that

The apology was for saying he had lost his job....not for the shoplifting

Well what a surprise.   Dave Edgar supports the McCanns and so must now be sneered at and have his expertise as an Ex Detective Inspector called into question.

Quote from the Belfast Telegraph

Snipped...

Dave had accepted demotion to join the Cheshire police force in 1986 after he left the RUC.
But he quickly moved up the ranks, becoming a detective inspector for the second time in his career.

As a result, Dave found himself at the heart of these high-profile investigations.

Dave’s team were stumped until they identified killer Stephen Mottram through the use of controversial Low Copy Number DNA profiling to analyse single cells left at the scene.

Mottram, 40, from Cheshire, was convicted in 2007 and will serve 16 years.

Dave said: “It was a difficult and long case, and thank God we were able to use the DNA tests.”

This have-a-go hero dad, 47, was kicked to death by a group of feral youths outside his Cheshire home.

Dave Edgar’s work on the case, the same month Stephen Mottram was convicted, led to his three teen killers being sentenced to life.

Dave was also awarded a judge’s commendation for his work on the case.

End quote

That Belfast Telegraph story is, understandably perhaps, just a little bit flattering and seems to be a mixture of two cases. The first one, the Stephen Mottram case, was investigated by a team of 20 officers led by DCI Ankers. The judge, Elgan Edwards commended the actions of the whole investigation team.

The second case is that of Garry Newlove. I don't know who led that investigation, but the perpetrators were arrested within four days, so it wasn't as difficult and complicated as the Mottram case.

Scotland Yard used his e-fits in the Crimewatch 2013 programme?

Stupid judge giving him a commendation then, what with him being not much cop and all that (pun intended).

Is that the sum total of the outstanding work he did?  And that has significantly progressed the case how in your opinion?

By association he was one of what Clarence Mitchell called "The Big Boys". Quite what Mr Mitchell meant by that I do not know.

There is not a lot one can say about that. *&*%£
