Not sure what the Portuguese police have to do with Exton's opinion. The Smith change of mind has no direct quotes.

Mrs Smith (who produced the second efit) stating, long since the archiving of the first enquiry, that she and her husband stand ready to support Kate and Gerry in any way they can to get Madeleine back certainly has a direct quote.

An odd thing for her to say if she and her husband are not fully convinced of the McCanns' innocence of anything nefarious in respect of Madeleine's disappearance.

The source you are using to attribute an e-fit to Mrs Smith contains major errors of an obvious nature.  At least one of these errors can be dated back as far as the early part of Sep 2007.

Caveat emptor on its e-fit bit.  Personally, I am not buying it.
What's up, old man?

Then why did it get reported in the Times piece?

No idea but, in direct quotes, Exton certainly seems to agree with me.

Does he now?  He may have said it's possible Madeleine left the apartment and had an accident, but I don't recall him agreeing with the rest of your ludicrous theory.

Tell me Alfie if Exton thought Madeleine had had an accident and wrote a report which was hypercritical of the McCanns and mentions anomalies in their statements, what do you think he thought had happened?

If I tell you what I think he meant you won't agree, you'll think he meant something else, so is there any point me or you arguing over something neither or us will likely ever know the answer to?  As far as I'm concerned there are no serious anomalies in their statements which leads me to believe they covered up an accidental death, nor is there any suggestion in anything I have read on the subject that leads me to the conclusion that Exton believes this either.

Good tactic.

The report compiled by Exton said this :

"As well as questioning parts of the McCanns’ evidence, it contained sensitive information about Madeleine’s sleeping patterns and raised the highly sensitive possibility that she could have died in an accident after leaving the apartment herself from one of two unsecured doors."

The part that intrigues me is this "Oakley’s six-month investigation included placing undercover agents inside the Ocean Club where the family stayed, lie detector tests, covert surveillance and a forensic re-examination of all existing evidence."   I wonder if the undercover agent with the Ocean Club got anywhere.  It is the area I think the PJ really missed with the OC and MW senior staff statements not linking properly.

The full quote was "The report, seen by the Sunday Times, called for the E-Fits to be released immediately and said "anomalies" in statements by the McCanns and their friends must be resolved".
So the anomalies are between the statements of the McCanns and the statements of their friends.  In a situation like that it isn't a done deal to put the reason for the anomalies directly onto the McCanns.  Could the fault be in the friends' statements?

There are 2 ways of resolving anomalies, either everyone involved changes their recollections until it all agrees or it is decided that one statement is untrue.

Do you think 9 statements by 9 individuals about the events of one day that correspond in pretty much exact detail are more or less likely to be jointly agreed upon in advance?

Fair enough.  Who's job is that?  If it is the PJ's job they should have done that before archiving the case.

It all depends who was included in the subgroup friends of the McCanns.  Did this include Gerry's tennis mates? E.g. Jez Wilkins seems unlikely to have joined in a joint timeline response.
