You never know?

As the investigation develops it is possible Scotland Yard may wish certain persons of interest to be brought in for questioning or to provide fresh witness statements.

While it would be the home police force that carried out such activities, the Met has already requested that a small team of British officers are on the ground to observe and assist in that process.

In preparation for today’s announcement, senior officers from Operation Grange made 16 visits to Portugal in order to ensure that any potential difficulties were ironed out.

If a British suspect is ever charged with abduction or murder in the case, the law allows them to be tried at the Old Bailey in London, even if the alleged crime took place overseas.

Yes and has far as I can see,the Portuguese duly let OG have their rope and SY are doing their utmost too use it on themselves.All imo of course,and the cost to the Portuguese?

I don't understand what you mean when you say:" ... the Portuguese duly let OG have their rope and SY are doing their utmost too use it on themselves."
An explanation would be helpful.
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

My opinion is that SY are running the show...but saying little so as not to dent the Portuguese pride

The thread isn't about who is 'running the show', it's about how the Operation Grange investigative review was organised. .

Well there were 12 British persons of interest. Can we name any?

"We are satisfied that our review has now progressed to a position where we have identified 38 persons of interest. These individuals are from a number of European countries and we are now at an advanced stage of dialogue with each country.

Over the coming months we will be conducting assertive enquiries, with the assistance of host countries to establish more information about the individuals concerned and any potential involvement.

Twelve of the persons of interest are UK Nationals who we believe were in Portugal at the time Madeleine went missing."

An interesting nugget of information here;

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood. This homicide investigator [Homicide and Serious Crime Command] has chosen for his team experienced investigators who are close to the end of their careers.

Three months after the Met form Operation Grange;

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "MPS officers travelled to Portugal at the beginning of August and had their first formal meeting with Portuguese authorities to discuss ways to progress the investigative review."

It probably saved paying out redundancy money at a time when the Met were being asked to cut costs.

I wonder who said that and why? I can find no record of Redwood taking part in any other investigation than Operation Grange.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, of the Met?s Homicide and Serious Crime Command, who has been dubbed Britain?s top cold case detective.
://www.gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk/press/53sep11/EXPRESS_09_09_2011.htm

POLICE have finally admitted Madeleine McCann was abducted four years ago........But only now have detectives put in writing that her case is one of abduction. ........The Met at first refused to release paperwork under the Freedom of Information Act on the grounds it would “adversely harm the investigation”. ..................But, after an appeal, police finally handed over details to the Daily Star Sunday last week after a wait of nearly three months.
  http://www.gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk/press/56dec11/STAR_18_12_2011.htm

 Scotland Yard’s 37-strong team includes three detective inspectors and five detective sergeants.....There are also 19 detective constables on the case under the lead of Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood......And three of the country’s top cold case officers have been brought in.......Along with Commander Simon Foy, Mr Redwood and Detective Inspector Tim Dobson, Mr Campbell is part of a “Gold Group” monitoring the review.The group has met eight times since it began last May to discuss progress.
http://www.gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk/press/57jan12/STAR_29_01_2012.htm

SCOTLAND YARD detectives are poised to interview the so-called Tapas Seven as their inquiry into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann steps up a gear. ........A Yard spokesman declined to say who would be interviewed and when. “We are not going into that level of details,” he said. “We are not at the stage of speaking to individuals yet. We are laying the groundwork.”
http://www.gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk/press/58feb12/EXPRESS_05_02_2012.htm

So as at February 2012 no interviews had been conducted, it is suggested.

Considering all the Portuguese documents that they would have  needed to get translated before they could begin  to read and evaluate the evidence, I'm surprised they were in any position to make such a statement by December 2011

I think the Star is referring to the remit which it managed to prise out of the Met. It seems it was written without anyone at all being interviewed.

During the first Panorama programme about the case it emerged that the PJ had been reviewing the case using a team in Porto. They had found nothing that would justify reopening it. Redwood said his team were working to provide existing or new evidence to the PJ which would lead them to reopen it. It seems that was important.

http://www.gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk/press/60april12/PANORAMA_20_04_2012.htm

Interestingly;

Throughout the course of the review officers have been in close contact with the McCann family who have been assigned a Family Liaison Officer as is standard in accordance with national family liaison policy.
http://www.gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk/press/60april12/MetropolitanPolice_25_04_2012.htm

On 12th May 2012 The Met released an age progression image of Madeleine and appealed for information;

“If you know where Madeleine McCann is now or you have new direct information/evidence about what has happened to her then please contact us.

 “The second point of appeal today is in relation to those who were at the resort of Praia da Luz between 28 April and 3 May 2007. If you were either on holiday or in residence in the resort during this period, particularly in the vicinity of the Ocean Club, and you have not been spoken to by police either here or in Portugal then please call us

And three of the country’s top cold case officers have been brought in.

The three, from the Metropolitan Police’s Murder Review Group, are assisting the main Operation Grange team reviewing the Madeleine case files.

The combined salaries of the team total more than £1.3million with thousands also being spent following up leads, including at least four trips abroad.

The Met has vowed there will be no limits to the probe, which is being funded through a grant from the Home Office.

Already this year the cold case squad has seen Gary Dobson, 36, and David Norris, 35, brought to justice over the 1993 murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence.

Along with Commander Simon Foy, Mr Redwood and Detective Inspector Tim Dobson, Mr Campbell is part of a “Gold Group” monitoring the review.The group has met eight times since it began last May to discuss progress.

A spokesman for the Met said: “A Major Investigation Team is assigned to Operation Grange. Staff numbers are open to change depending on the needs of the review.”

https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/232610/Cold-case-team-in-Madeleine-McCann-hunt

In responding to a Freedom of Information request, the Met said: “A major investigation team is assigned to Operation Grange.

“This is made up of one detective chief inspector, three detective inspectors, five detective sergeants, 19 detective constables, six police support staff.

“The MIT is assisted by three murder review group officers.

“Staff numbers are open to change depending on the needs of the review.

“The MIT also continues to work on its existing outstanding homicide cases.”
