One potential explanation is that the translator got it wrong. It was the same initial one I suspect got muddled over the key issue.

Re the FLOs, it's not clear whether that bit of their statement came from their own notes of conversations with Kate, or whether they were going off a copy of the 4 May police statement, which stated "twins".

They probably would have thought that that was what she meant... but then she disappeared, so I suppose it would be logical to think of any normally mundane detail that could be potentially significant.

It would seem so unlikely for Kate to mention this and want the FLO to follow this up if it wasn't true, to extent regardless of who woke up.  If Kate was guilty would she have asked for this?  I can't see the reasons myself.

You mean there was no one with a vested interest in hitting the Rebelo investigation and Kate and Gerry where it would hurt, with only one highly damaging leak of Madeleine's accurate sentence direct from police sources?

Three with one stone!  I think it was a master stroke!

On the other hand ... there is always the possibility the Telecino journalist was psychic ...
