"Police hunt German couple with 'out of it' girl who looked like Madeleine McCann"

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/police-hunt-german-couple-with-out-of-it-girl-who-looked-like-madeleine-mccann-7722811.html

"Detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are searching for a German couple spotted with a girl matching her description.

A new witness has come forward to claim she saw a blonde girl at a campsite on Spain’s Costa del Sol three days after Madeleine disappeared from Praia da Luz in Portugal on 3 May 2007.

Holidaymaker Karen Sisson claims the girl appeared “groggy” and “alienated” from the couple who she was staying with in a caravan.

Ms Sisson, 49, said she called Spanish police but after the apparent sighting at the campsite near Fuengirola but got no response from them.

She said the girl looked “out of it” and wore a pink t-shirt, shorts and beige hat.

Ms Sisson, from Gibraltar, claims the girl did not fit with the couple and their two curly-haired daughters.

She grew more suspicious the following day when the child wore the same clothes.

Ms Sisson said: “She seemed alienated and completely different to her family. It was really most peculiar.”

Campsite registration records show the couple’s German car registration plate went out of use 38 years ago.

Information about the apparent sighting was passed to Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange, which is trying to trace Madeleine.

Kate and Gerry McCanns’ spokesman told The Sun that Ms Sisson had “done exactly the right thing” reporting her claims to the police."

When was that reported to OG?

Campsite registration records show the couple’s German car registration plate went out of use 38 years ago.  That is really odd at the best of times.

Even a picture of the type of van they were driving?

"The alarm was raised by holidaymaker Karen Sisson, 49, who was staying at the Cabopino campsite near Fuengirola. "   Fuengirola is in Spain.

But despite filing a report with both British and Spanish police at the time, giving descriptions and a car numberplate, Sisson, who lives in Gibraltar, is certain the sighting was never investigated.

Intriguingly The Olive Press has now managed to locate details of a German family – under the name ‘Karsten Meyer’ – who did indeed check into the Cabopino campsite, near Fuengirola, three days after Maddie disappeared.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even more intriguingly, records from the campsite show that the couple actually paid a supplement on arrival on May 6 for an ‘extra child’ having originally booked themselves in as one family.

They had a blue Mercedes Vita van and were towing a caravan.

A numberplate recorded by the campsite, which began ‘BE’ with five letters has not been used in Germany since 1974, although the first Vita van’s were only manufactured in 1996.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“But this is the first we have heard about any possible Maddie sighting here and police have certainly never been in touch.”

It is this discrepancy that has so irritated Sisson, who this week once again contacted UK police investigating the case.

“There was something strange about it all,” explained the Durham-born artist, who explained that the couple were of slim build and looked to be in their late thirties.

“It was like the girl was alienated and completely different to her family. It really was most peculiar,” said Sisson.

“She was sat on her own, not playing but just standing swaying as if in a dream. She looked really out of it.”

She continued: “It was also strange that they also had two toddlers, with curly blond hair, eerily like Sean and Amelie.

“And there were children’s toys, a bike and rollerblades around the caravan for a girl her age, so I had the impression maybe they had lost a girl and seen Maddie and wanted to replace her,” she added.

“I deliberately went to look at the girl again the next day and she was wearing the same clothes as the day before even though it was 27 degrees heat.

“A mother would know that this was a strange thing as children of that age go through so many clothes and love to strip off in the heat.

“I have a little girl myself who is just a year older than Maddie; it makes me think about it even more.”

She continued: “At one point the girl started to move towards the pool to play with other children and the lady came and got her and lead her back by the hand.

“She obviously did not want her playing with the other kids.”

Sisson had been on holiday with her husband Richard, a buyer for an electrical business in Gibraltar, when she first set eyes on the girl.

So convinced was she that it could be Maddie she actually made a two hour round trip a week later to check the family out again.

“I literally could not sleep, it haunted me and I decided to drive back to have a second look,” she said.

“It definitely looked like her, and again I contacted Crimestoppers and even my local Gibraltarian police, but nothing seems to have been done.”

The campsite confirmed that a Karsten Mayer had stayed there from May 6 to May 18, 2007.

As well as confirming the car number plate and a date of birth from 1970, they were also able to furnish a passport or ID number.

That was interesting Brietta, for I've just had a debate with a Karen Sissons  who seems to be active on the FB and other forums
Here is a post under the name of Karen Sisson
So from the context of the post below Karen Sisson is the same lady who made the report in 2007.

"This has made me gasp as I reported seeing a girl like Madeleine 3 days after it happened in 2007 with a family in Cabopino Campsite,nr Marbella they also had a dark blue people carrier. She too was with them but apart and distant,I reported it several times but don’t know if it was investigated thoroughly. It too was a very haunting image as she was not interacting with the family and looked very sad."

May, you are so wrong on all counts, just because details of registration numbers etc are not published in the press does not mean they were not gathered, just because reports were not published in the press earlier does not mean they have not been reported to the police, several times. You know how the enquiry was run, sightings and evidence have not been acted on efficiently by the police which is why it is no further on 5 yrs down the line. No-one wants to get famous out of this they just want to know that their evidence has been taken into account and eliminated so they can move on. The Mccanns asked for anyone who knew anything to come forward again in case it had been missed."

Karen Sisson, did you not read the article here where a lady spotted Madeleine and was 100% sure it was her, but she had guests over at Xmas and couldn’t get away for a whole week to report it. You are having a laugh. Last time I checked, people in costa del sol have both landlines and mobiles."

Karen Sisson … The Mccanns asked for anyone who knew anything to come forward again in case it had been missed.” *** – - But when Martin Grime took the best trained blood and cadaverine detection dogs in the world, they dismissed them as “notoriously unreliable”. If your child had gone missing and a dog indicted blood and cadaverine in your house, would your reaction be simply to say it was impossible, or would you fold up with grief and dread at what it actually implied ? And when you were asked about “Sightings” of your child, would you grin and laugh, or would you be on the phone to the police in that place, even if you did not go yourself ? And would you actually search for your child, or spend the first evening deleting calls and messages from your mobile phone ? And so on."

"Karsten Meyer?"

I have seen reports that the family involved were Swiss and were checked out.  If so, the question I have about that is, was the sighting eliminated at the time ... or did it have to wait until Operation Grange started investigating?

"Mystery" Maddie lookalike spotting solved
15-05-2012

Karsten Mayer, the man whose name appeared in newspapers around the world in connection with missing Madeleine McCann has come forward to prove the ‘lookalike’ girl was in fact his own daughter.

CID officers in Bern say that he has already “all but” been ruled out of enquiries. The 41-year-old Swiss father-of-three confirmed he had been at the Cabopino campsite, but that the blond girl mistaken for Maddie was his own daughter who was the same age. His name came to light after British mother-of-two Karen Sissons, 49, followed up on a report she had given police on a possible sighting of Madeleine at Cabopino Camping on the Costa del Sol three days after she disappeared.

However, it seems officials never followed up on her tip. The mystery girl was with a family with two other curly-haired children, was wearing a pink T-shirt, shorts and a beige hat and seemed “out of it” according to Sisson, who lives in Gibraltar.

“She seemed alienated and completely different to her family. It really was most peculiar.” Sisson’s suspicions grew when she saw the girl wearing the same outfit the following day.

Madeleine McCann went missing on May 3, 2007 from Praia de Luz in Portugal, a few hours drive from the Cabopino campsite. The family paid extra after arriving at the campsite with one more child than expected on May 6, The Sun reported.

The campsite’s records show the family stayed two weeks and checked in under the name Karsten Mayer with gave 1970 as the year of birth. While their car was a Mercedes Vito people carrier first manufactured in 1996, it had a BE German number plate, which has not been used since 1974. In response to these Sisson’s comments, Mr Mayers said: “It is quite possible that my daughter appeared distant. She was tired after a very long road trip. We spent 12 days at the camping ground we journeyed further around Portugal. I do not think a kidnapper would have done that. I find these media reports about me unbelievable and am reporting to police immediately before I am arrested!”

Meanwhile, this was the second ‘sighting’ of Maddie in less than a month. In April someone claimed to having seen a girl in Nerja bearing a strong physical resemblance to Madeleine. This sighting came after a photo of how Madeline might look now, aged nine, was released last month.

Meanwhile, 30 children under age 18 have gone missing in Portugal since Madeleine disappeared, according to official figures.

Looks like the sighting wasn't investigated until Operation Grange took over.

I don't know but the name of  the booking was "Karsten Mayer" but "Karsten" appears to be a male gender name,  so I'm a bit confused by that.  I thought if they have false number plates they could have false identities  too.

"His name came to light after British mother-of-two Karen Sissons, 49"
"Holidaymaker Karen Sisson"
Sometimes it is "Sisson" and other times "Sissons" as in those two examples.

Mayer, a businessman who lives near the Swiss capital Bern, was traced by journalists using his car number plate. Detectives in Bern say he has “all but” been ruled out of inquiries.

The truly disturbing aspect is that suspicions were raised about this little girl in the week after Madeleine went missing from Luz to an area well within comfortable travelling.

It took until 2012 before anyone bothered to trace her and her family despite a report being lodged within days of Madeleine's disappearance.

She wasn't Madeleine ... but she could have been.  Leaving one to wonder how many other possible sightings around the time of Madeleine's disappearance were reported to the police and not followed through.

As long as it was eliminated, it doesn't really matter who did it.

Agreed. There were “sightings” all over the world and any suggestion that they should have all been given the same priority and resource is unrealistic IMO.

I think you overlook the point that despite the authorities being informed no-one bothered to check it out until 2012.

As it proved to be of no value, nothing was lost by being delayed.

Is it only Madeleine McCann amongst the missing children of the world who in your opinion deserves to have credible leads ignored ... or is it your opinion that sightings of all missing children are to be ignored?

Whichever ... my opinion is that your response to a delay of years in checking out a nearby possible sighting three days after Madeleine disappeared epitomises the lack of diligence her case was afforded at the time.
