You could see how it happens - from a distance one takes down a registration number and the people speak German so they make the assumption they are German number plates but when the police check them they appear to be old obsolete German plates. But it only begins to make sense when the Police realise they are Swiss plates and the man is traced to Berne in Switzerland.
It is possible that the witness mistook the Swiss speech for German. So what! I'm sure had the sighting been checked out by the police in 2007 that would have been discovered then rather than being ignored until 2012.
The whole point which is being being deflected away from is that in the days following the disappearance of a little blonde girl a lookalike little blonde girl was noticed in a camp site within easy travelling distance.
Valid questions were raised about her demeanour.
Valid questions were raised about her apparent late addition to the family party she was with.
Valid questions were raised about the vehicle they travelled in.
Despite the witness being very proactive in reporting this it seems to have been ignored. In much the same manner as Jayne Jensen and Annie Wiltshire's sighting of two blonde men appeared to have been too and without their persistence would never have been heard of.
Mr and Mrs McCluskey also had to exercise extreme persistence to have the details of their sighting put on record; the little blonde girl they saw was apparently vouched for by her mother and by neighbours.
If these three instances which had the potential to be of relevance to finding Madeleine in the hours and days after her disappearance were ignored ... what else of paramount importance was ignored?

They also claimed they saw two blond, tanned men acting suspiciously near the McCanns’ holiday home on the afternoon before Madeleine went missing.
Annie Wiltshire and her sister Jayne Jensen said they tried to tell Portuguese police at the time and then tried to speak to police in the UK without success.
They were not on the original police list of potential witnesses because their apartment was not in the same block as the McCanns’.
They finally spoke to the British authorities two months ago.
The details were passed onto Kate and Gerry McCann’s private detective agency in Spain, Metodo 3, but have only just emerged.
The women, both thought to be in their 40s from Aylesford in Kent, were on a two-week holiday in the Algarve at the same time as the McCanns and became friends through tennis.
They were staying in an apartment nearby and on the day Madeleine disappeared, they say they saw two men in a neighbouring apartment acting suspiciously.
A source close to the investigation said: “The sisters saw two men wearing trunks, standing on a balcony, whom they had not seen before. They just felt that they looked odd, but didn’t do anything about it.”
Later that night, Madeleine vanished and the women helped with the search.

Mrs Wiltshire showed a Portuguese police officer the apartment where the two blond men had been staying, but it was empty.
