And Kate said she did wash it shortly before the dog arrived, which sums up the value of the alert to me.

I don't believe Eddie alerted to Cuddle Cat,   if there had been cadaver scent on the toy he should have alerted to it when he first found it,   instead he tossed it in the air.

Kate washed Cuddle Cat weeks after Madeleine disappeared as she said there was no smell of Madeleine left on it,  just sun cream.

The dogs follow skin cells apparently -

The strongest scent comes from crushed vegetation and disturbed earth. The actual scent of the person comes off in dead skin cells and chemicals released from the skin. Even dressed head to toe in winter gear a person still gives off enough scent for a dog to track them.

12 and a half feet of earth won't stop the dogs.

They managed to sniff out Finocchiaro’s body, even though it was buried 12 and a half feet underground.

thats because remains are present...the scent may well have leached through soil upwards and be detectable in the first few inches of soil....that isnt remnant scent...it doesnt dissipate

I'm trying to understand why Lace doesn't believe him?

https://youtu.be/c4NMYPsFKb8?t=81  Play the video through from this point to 6m.
Eddie failed to alert to CC in the lounge more than once.
Later we can see 2 separate alerts in the living room, one to the counter-top above the 2 cupboards & the 2nd just after Eddie had his nose pointed at the table, then walked behind the chair. The latter is certainly nowhere near the cupboard Eddie was retrieved from. Was CC even in the cupboard when Eddie gave 2 separate alerts?

"The only alert indication given was when the dog located a pink cuddly toy in
the villas lounge. The CSI dog did not alert to the toy when screened
separately.

It is my view that it is possible that the EVRD is alerting to cadaver scent
contamination. No evidential or intelligence reliability can be made from this
alert unless it can be confirmed with corroborating evidence."

Smithman carrying a child in his arms checked his watch after passing the Smith family and the time was 10:03. Both are still unidentified 10 years later.

The investigating officers were singularly unimpressed by Eddie and Cuddle cat and said as much in their final report.

You mean the laymen?

Such was the importance of cuddlecat ... that no-one bothered to place it in an evidence bag to be sent off for forensic inspection.
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

Why? Surely it wasn't a suspect and what would forensics  likely show

You mean the laymen?

Judges and jurors are laymen, so don't knock it.
You are a layman ... but you have an opinion.
I too am a layman ... who watched the supposedly definitive video of cuddle cat being briefly played with and then ignored ... and as described by Misty, later on a dog barking at who knows what.

It had as much of an impression on me as it had on the officer compiling the final PJ report.  There is a really comprehensive discussion somewhere on the forum where you can read all about it.

Who is to know.
But surely you agree it should have been done.
Just as the bedding on Madeleine's bed should have been done?
Don't you think so?

When ?

When was it decided that Madeleine hadn't just wandered off ?
By the following day CC was being carried about by Kate and might have been handled by a number of people by that time.

Fair enough!
You obviously believe that there should have been no forensic testing of either Madeleine's bedding or Cuddle Cat.
