A retired police officer and former local councillor has killed himself after confessing to being a serial killer and rapist responsible for crimes unsolved for decades.

François Verove, whose police career included postings in an elite unit responsible for protecting the presidential palace and also in a squad that investigates paedophilia, is thought to have committed at least four murders and six rapes between 1986 and 1997.

Among his victims was Cécile Bloch, an 11-year-old girl raped, stabbed and killed in her block of flats in the Paris region in 1986 and another girl of the same age who was raped after being snatched from her bicycle, also in the Paris region, in 1994.

Verove, who was 59, killed himself by taking an overdose of medicine in an Airbnb flat he had rented in Le Grau-du-Roi, on the Mediterranean coast near Montpellier, after receiving a summons from a judge investigating the cold case that had baffled detectives for decades.

More than 750 retired members of the gendarmerie, France’s military police force, who were working in Paris at the time of the crimes have been summoned after investigators became convinced that the killer must have been an officer.

Police had a photofit of him drawn up by the witnesses who had seen him leaving Cécile’s block of flats after her killing and a nickname for him: Le Grêlé (the pockmarked one) because of his acne.

But they discovered his identity only after his relatives, thought to include his wife, said he had gone missing this week.

Investigators traced the Airbnb flat and found his body inside and next to it a note in which he confessed to being Le Grêlé.

The note is reported to have said that his life had “not being going well” at the time of the crimes, that he had had “urges” but had subsequently “got a grip” of himself and committed no offences since 1997 — a claim that is being investigated.

His DNA matched that found at a crime scene, confirming his confession, prosecutors said.

French media said he was believed to have killed himself because he realised that the net was closing in on him. The retired gendarmes summoned by investigators were all being subjected to a DNA test after questioning.

Verove is reported to have been a gendarme between 1983 and 1988 when he was a member of the Garde Républicaine, which protects France’s most prominent institutions, including the presidency, and foreign dignitaries and takes part in national ceremonies.

He left the gendarmerie to join the Police Nationale, the civil police force, where he worked for the Brigade des Mineurs, a squad specialising in crimes against children and notably sex crimes.

After retiring he moved with his wife to Prades-le-Lez, a small town inland from Montpellier and about 30 miles from where his body was found. He was elected to the town’s council in 1994.

Among the other crimes he is believed to have committed are the murders of Irmgard Mueller, a 20-year-old German au pair found tied up with her throat slit in the flat where she was employed in central Paris, and of Gilles Politi, 38, an Air France mechanic who was the father of the family for whom she had worked. Verove is also suspected of murdering Karine Leroy, 19, whose body was found in woodland outside Paris in 1994.

He is thought to have committed at least six rapes in and around Paris.

Investigators had long suspected that the killer was a police officer. His rape victims had said that he often used police terminology. On at least one occasion, he is thought to have shown his police identity card. On others, he used handcuffs. His ability to keep one step ahead of investigators also pointed to knowledge of police procedures.

But his identity remained hidden until Nathalie Turquey, an investigating magistrate, decided to take a look at the case.

The disclosure came as a shock in Prades-le-Lez, where a council officer described him as “very nice” and said it was “impossible to imagine that he was a killer”.

A police officer who had worked with him in the Brigade des Mineurs said he was “calm and collected. He had a soft voice, he was nice and a helpful colleague always trying to resolve conflicts.

Of course there are some people busting a gut to try and get him released from prison on the basis that they believe he’s innocent.

I don't know whether he is innocent or not, but I do think there is a possibility.

And, I'm not "busting a gut", although, I agree, some people are, and one of them was, I understand, a friend of both Jodi and Luke.

Couzens is, IMO, a completely different "kettle of fish". For a start, there is excellent evidence that he is actually guilty. Also, he abused his position. I would have got into a car with Couzens, had he tried to arrest me for breaking lockdown rules, as, like Sarah Everard, i did break lockdown rules, and I felt bad about it, as, no doubt, she did. Of course, I would have gone with a police officer. So would many other people.

An extremely dangerous man. IMO, he deserves a full life tariff.

Yes, although Sarah's murder was obviously a heinous act, we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that she was out breaking lockdown laws that were there to protect the elderly & vulnerable.
She could have killed someone.
