Jeremy Bamber was on 29 October 1986, convicted, by a majority of ten to two, at Chelmsford Crown Court, for the murder of five members of his family.

On a cold June morning in 1994 in the sleepy New Zealand town of Dunedin, police were alerted to what has become the most controversial murder case of recent times.

Anni Dewani was a Swedish-born ethnic Indian Lohana Hindu woman who, while on her honeymoon in South Africa, was kidnapped and then murdered whilst taking a taxi on a slum tourism trip through Gugulethu township near Cape Town on 13 November 2010.

Luke Mitchell was convicted of the murder of his then girlfriend Jodi Jones (14) in January 2005. Several appeals and applications to the SCCRC have failed to bring any new information to the case.

The remains of Samuel Alexander were found by police after he was reported missing by concerned neighbours. Samuel, also known as Sami Yacoub El-Kayoubi, was thought to have been killed several months earlier and buried under concrete in his back garden.

Billy Middleton was acquitted of murder, two counts of attempted murder and of sexual assault by virtue of the notorious 'not proven' verdict following a trial at Aberdeen High Court in March 2009.

On 2 July 1998 Siôn Jenkins was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his foster daughter Billie-Jo Jenkins. On 9 February 2006, after two appeals and two retrials he was finally acquitted. He had spent six years in prison, and from the outset had consistently maintained his complete innocence.

Madeleine McCann (almost 4) disappeared from a bedroom in her parents holiday apartment at the Ocean Club, Praia da Luz, Portugal. Despite extensive searches on land and sea no trace of her has ever been found.

Nora Anne Quoirin disappeared from her parents holiday accommodation at the Dusun Resort in Nilai, Malaysia. Her remains were found 2.5 km away some 9 days later, she had been dead for several days. A coroner has since returned a finding of misadventure.

It was a quiet Saturday morning as Ithaisa Suarez returned home from work greeting her son Yeremi as she entered the family home. Five minutes later he was gone, abducted by two Scottish paedophiles according to his mother.

Baby Daniel Freita Abreu (1) disappeared from the family home on the island of Madeira only to appear safe and well some kilometers away two days later.

Joana Cipriano (8) disappeared from her home village of Figueira in the Algarve, Portugal. Following a criminal investigation, her mother Leonor and her uncle João Cipriano were indicted and later found guilty of the child's murder and of disposing of her remains. Joana's body has never been found.

Ben Needham (21 months) disappeared from the surrounds of his grandparents home on the Greek island of Kos. One minute he was happily playing and the next he had completely disappeared. No trace of him has ever been found despite extensive searches.

Mikaeel Kular (3) was reported missing by his mother leading to an extensive search in Edinburgh. The youngster's body later turned up in a wood behind his aunt's home in Kirkcaldy, Fife.

Almost 17 years ago a young family from Sindelsdorf, Germany, went on holiday to the Portuguese Algarve in their motor home. After having eaten they walked down to the beach, René was about 20 feet ahead and suddenly he was gone! They searched for him but in vain. The local police were immediately informed but no trace of René was ever found.

Amy Fitzpatrick (15) was on her way home from a friends house but never arrived. Despite extensive searches no sign of her has ever been found.

A look at the recent removal of a blonde blue-eyed child from a Roma camp in Greece and a second from a gypsy home in Dublin, Ireland.

Joanna Yeates disappeared from her flat in Bristol on the 17 December 2010. Her snow covered body was found lying on a verge near Failand, North Somerset some eight days later. Engineer Vincent Tabak, a neighbour, was subsequently found guilty of her murder.

Some eight hours after the discovery of a ransom note in the family home in Colorado the body of the American child pageant queen was found in the basement by her father John Ramsey. New theory claims brother to blame.

Olympic athlete and gold medallist Oscar Pistorius shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp four times including once in the head telling police he thought she was an intruder. Trial commenced on 3rd March 2014.

Indian national Paramjeet Singh who was given political asylum and granted indefinite leave to stay in the UK twenty years ago arrested in the Portuguese Algarve on murder and bombing charges. Indian Government seeking extradition.

While walking home alone after a night out, Andrew encountered a group of 6 men and at least 4 women. One of them swung a punch at him so hard that it broke his jaw, he fell back hitting his head on the pavement fracturing his skull. As he lay dying on the ground he was brutally kicked.

Kate Prout vanished on 5 November 2007. Her estranged husband Adrian Prout was subsequently tried and convicted of her murder. He has now confessed after failing a lie detector test.
