What's he going to say exactly? That he helped with an application to the CCRC which was thrown out for being hopeless. That he then advised Bamber to appy for judicial review of the CCRC's decision which was thrown out on the papers by a single judge who concluded also that the case was hopeless. And then he advised Bamber to renew the application in open court before two judges, one of whom was one of the most senior civil judges in the country, who also threw the case out after only one hour - yet again concluding that it was utterly hopeless. Im sure the talkwill be riveting.

I am sad to be unable to attend this lecture. I might have asked the great man if he truly beleived Bamber to be innocent and if so could he explain the anomalies in the case. I guess with the Nightingale case etc McKay is making a name for himself as a human rights lawyer
and besides the lecture fees needs to earn a living and presumablly also pay off his debts.

Will this be audio/video recorded and released for public listening/viewing?
The school has pdf'd a limited number of transcripts in the past... http://www.law.cf.ac.uk/newsandevents/public_lecture_transcripts.html (http://www.law.cf.ac.uk/newsandevents/public_lecture_transcripts.html)
I wonder if they could be persuaded to do one of this lecture because of the case's notoriety.

Where is the balance? Who will be supporting the Bamber conviction and pointing out trial judge Drake's "mountain of circumstantial evidence"?
I wonder if McKay will mention shooting dead pigs in Arizona or rifles being cooked in a cold Arga to 'brand' Neville?
-
John the point I find the hardest to get my head around is I cannot think of another women I know or any of the girls on here who would touch, go near let alone sleep with someone who had either murdered two babies or arranged the murder of two babies. After all she was obviously a very intelligent women.
You could not even look at someone that was responsible for such carnage. I should think any women would be actually physically sick if you found out the person you loved had killed children let alone go visit the mortuary where the babies bodies were kept.
I give her the benefit of doubt over the reasons she went to the police and choose to believe she made up a story about Jeremy because he had dumped her and maybe the whole story ran away with her and she didn't realise the consequences of her actions.
This is just my opinion but in my eyes doesn't make her sound so bad as the alternative

Bamber wont be going anywhere, Tim. The Arizona tests didn't prove a thing. How can you compare dead, cold, pig skin that doesnt even have a blood supply with that of a living person?

Jack, there is more to this case than the evidence of julie Mugford.
What do you thiink about Sheila running upstairs after the 1st shot, do you think that happened?

Where do you get off making up this nonsense Jackie? Jeremy didn't dump Julie. She chose to leave him after watching him stroking Collins' hair like some love sick schoolboy. She told him she would destroy him and we all know about the pillow over the face episode. Julie had had enough of him and she knew that spilling the beans was the only right thing to do for her own sanity.

Andy I am trying to go through points of the case I don't believe which convicted JB.
So the next point I find hard to believe is that JB actually carried out the murders?
He is the only person I think on a whole life tariff with NO history of violence and not even bought up in a violent background and although it looks like the prison and the authorities have tried to proof he is mad none of the tests have proved this.
Nobody from school or in his past has said he was ever violent in fact a bit of a woos
It's even been documented he didn't like blood
So then we are left with the possibility of a third party responsible and was that third party instructed by Jeremy or someone else and where do you find a hit man to kill two babies
There are names mentioned on here but have they ever been investigated?
Further reasons above I would like John to talk or meet Jeremy to see what he thinks
Jeremy could hardly say I am not answering that question it's a bit tricky
There is talk on the official website of a taped tv interview, is that interviewer going to be allowed to ask anything ?
He should be

You must follow the evidence Jackie and not make sweeping speculations.
If there was an intruder why did Jeremy concoct the story about the mysterious telephone call from Nevill where he allegedly said Sheila's got the gun ?? If this story is correct then it was Sheila who did it. If it was not correct then jeremy lied to cover his involvement. Point is Jackie that both scenarios completely rule out an outsider doing the deed.
Before you jump to conclusions Jackie I will add that the photographs and forensics rule Sheila out totally. Therefore only one conclusion can be gleaned from this and that is that Jeremy is guilty.

David you make the mistake of thinking commonsense, logic and EVIDENCE should resonate even in the mind of a Bamber fan! But you're dealing with people who want Bamber to be innocent regardless of the facts because they like a photo of him from 1985! You just can't teach an old dog new tricks nor install commonsense into a Bamberette!
-
I really hope someone asks him to answer the question directly and honestly, does he think Jeremy is innocent? His refusal to give a straight answer speaks volumes IMO.
-
This is a long shot, but if there are any students from the Cardiff Law School or others looking in who plan to attend Simon McKay's lecture it would be interesting to hear your views on the Bamber case after the event.

Anyone from here travelling to wales for the event?

It would have been an awesome opportunity to confront Simon McKay and challenge him in public so I was all set to travel to Cardiff but there are no late flights back which would require an overnight stay and that creates a problem for me at the moment. We shall see though as I may be able to work something out before Monday.

There is a thread on blue about the hitman, they think jm made it all up. I was underthe impression that it was Bamber himself who told her he hired a hitman? She repeatedly said to him '£2000 for five lives'. of course we know there was no hitman, it was just JB trying to lessen his involvment in the slayings.

It seems that Mr McKay is playing the unsafe conviction card as he is unable to prove it is a wrongful conviction. This is the old favourite among lawyers and barristers when all they have to do is put a certain amount of doubt in the minds of the appeal court judges. I personally find this quite reprehensible.

McKay hasnt got a leg to stand on when it comes to the Bamber case. The judges have already kicked him into touch which says it all for me. He probably doesnt even think he is innocent anyway. 8)-)))

To be fair to Mr McKay there is only so much he can do on a pro bono basis. This case will be costing him more and more time and money the longer he represents Jeremy Bamber, money he can ill-afford to lose.
I do agree however that the only possible light at the end of the tunnel for Mr Bamber is for the Court of Appeal to rule that the conviction is somehow unsafe. Personally, I don't see this happening irrespective of PII or the other more recent arguments being put forward by his legal team.
It should also be remembered that an unsafe conviction is not a declaration of innocence. Consequently the appellant would be most unlikely to ever receive compensation.
-
There is a multitude of authorities on the internet discussing unsafe and wrongful convictions so I am not going to go into the difference here other than to say the former is not a declaration of innocence but the latter is.
You can have a conviction overturned on the basis that it is unsafe or does not meet the criterion for such convictions. Convictions have to be beyond a reasonable doubt and if it can be shown that this is not the case then a conviction is deemed unsafe.
Where evidence can be found to prove that someone is totally innocent of a crime then this will result in the conviction being overturned on the basis that it is a wrongful conviction.
