I understood probably and possibly to be degrees of (un)certainty - i.e., they weren't 100% certain.
Kate and Gerry are agreeing with Matt's uncertainty about whether he found the gates open or not and yet are insisting Madeleine could not have wandered.  I don't get that.

They weren't there when Matt checked. How could they have disagreed with his uncertainty?

I don't quite get what you are saying.
This was a jointly agreed sequence of events, Matt expresses uncertainty about whether the gates were closed, therefore IMO the McCanns can't say there is no possibility Madeleine wandered as the gates were not definitely found closed at Matt's check.

OK Matt might be mistaken and confused, for the Tapas 7 are sort of in favour of the abduction idea, so are they allowing the gates to be left open by the second abductor leaving?  You know the one that could have handed Madeleine to Tannerman, the one that could have been in the apartment when Gerry was in there.

SEQUENCE OF EVENTS: THURSDAY 3rd MAY 2007
20.30 TO 22.00 AS RECALLED BY TAPAS 9

http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/TIME_LINE_3_MAY_07.htm

In particular the child gate at the top of the stairs.

From the time line 3 May 2007

"2105: GM returns to his flat (5A) and enters via the patio gate entrance. This and a child gate at the top of the stairs were closed at the time. He enters the flat via the patio door which is closed but unlocked. "

"2130: RJO remains in 5D as daughter has vomited. MO goes to check on 5A via the patio gate entrance. The outside gate is probably shut, but the child gate on the stairs up to the patio is possibly open. The patio door is closed but unlocked.

"2200: (approx): KM leaves table to check children in 5A. The patio gate is closed and the child gate is also probably closed. She enters through the closed patio entrance, with the curtains closed. She crosses the living area, and there is no noise from the children's bedroom. She is about to leave, when she notices the bedroom door was open (approximately 60 degrees)."

What are the statements on the file that support the PJ coming up with this information?

MO enters flat, hears a sound in the children's bedroom that is probably one of the twins rolling over in their cot. He does not enter the bedroom but can see through a now quite open door (greater than 45 degrees) into the room.

Matt didn't hear any sounds!

I was there to check, erm, no, no funny sort of smells, no sort of funny draughts, no sort of funny sort of noises. http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/MATTHEW-OLDFIELD-ROGATORY.htm

Smithman carrying a child in his arms checked his watch after passing the Smith family and the time was 10:03. Both are still unidentified 10 years later.

He said no "funny sort of noises". Not no noise.

Would the familiar sound of a toddler possibly rolling over in bed be described as a "funny sort of noise"?

Or did he mean something potentially unexpected / suspicious?

Thank you
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

He said he could see the twins breathing not hearing a sound of one rolling over. You won't find anything about hearing a sound in his rog. Everything was quiet!

"You could see them, erm, see them breathing and there were two there and it was all completely quiet.

4078 'Is there anything else, that you smelt, could you smell anything''

Reply 'No, no, we've talked about that before, I didn't smell anything, I mean, I could see the children breathing, but I didn't clock it as abnormal, erm, it'd be completely to speculate to say whether their breathing was fast or, I couldn't say, I mean, they were breathing and that's what, you know, and that was what I was there to check, erm, no, no funny sort of smells, no sort of funny draughts, no sort of funny sort of noises, no, erm, nothing that I can think of for that. I mean, it was a complete just a shock out of the blue when, you know, I'd been in and then suddenly somebody's saying Madeleine's missing, there was nothing that made me think, oh'."

Yes, ok, but the context was of anything abnormal. He may have been trying to think whether there was anyone likely to have been in there at the time (as that appears to have been a topic of discussion amongst them at some point). It seems he didn't.
