From this remove, I agree that it sounds incomprehensible, however, we must bear in mind that EP found themselves faced with an unprecedented situation and Jeremy's was the only information they received. I truly believe that, had it NOT been for his presence there, they may have gone in sooner than they did. I think it likely that it was he who was playing a stalling game. (If) Nevill hadn't made the call Jeremy claimed, he and the family were long dead, but Jeremy wanted them to believe he'd been alive to make the call. Perhaps he was hoping to blur tod?

Very convenient, that fire pit. Jeremy made excellent use of it to burn his parents' clothes. I doubt anyone checked to see if some of his own clothes -ie those he wore to commit the crime?- found their way in.

I entirely agree that, leaving aside the decision would have been Colin's not hers, June didn't want the boys to go into care so she wouldn't have suggested it to Sheila. The very most likely to have happened would have been moving her and the boys into Bourtree Cottage, leaving Jeremy to do what? We hear from Jeremy, that an argument had ensued, but he then says Sheila was saying nothing. How, then, could there have been an argument?

Would the police/firearms specialists have really relied on Jeremy re the decision as to when to enter the farmhouse?

Oh, I've been in arguments where, at the time, I've said nothing, but afterwards, the anger has taken over!!  However, I cannot pretend to know how Sheila would have felt---of course I cant, because I didn't know Sheila.

Your theory re Sheila and the twins taking over Bourtree Cottage is an interesting one, and, of course, possible, but we can't know more than that!

I would have expected the police to be cleverer than to take Jeremy's words  at face value, and even if they did so initially, to do so for weeks afterwards???

But then, it's possible I have been over influenced by  Inspector Frost and his "policeman's nose".

What did Jeremy tell the police, apart from that he had a sister who was a "nutter"?  When asked whether or not he thought Sheila would harm her family, he actually said that he didn't know. He didn't say he thought she would.

You also have the power of hindsight.

It was Stan Jones who had a nose, his Welsh namesake somehow lost his sense of smell that day...

Ha, great response. Myster. Couldn't have been any better!

And, for all I know, it might be exactly right----------but then, it might not be!

Well, he had a wonderful advocate in "Taff" Jones, who no one dared to gainsay, so I guess it was all the permission he needed.

I believe it was Jeremy himself who said that Bourtree had been suggested as a place for Sheila.

Whilst you don't make it clear from where your anger came, as far as how Sheila felt, I suspect at times, helpless, and at other times, relieved that how deep a hole she was in, mummy and daddy would sort it out. As we have no true clue as to what that last discussion was about, and we only know she didn't like visiting the farm, she was probably feeling trapped and couldn't wait for Colin to come and fetch her. I believe we can confidently establish that being at WHF wasn't the holiday of a lifetime for her. Sadly, it became the last one OF her lifetime.

He really didn't need to say it, though, did he? He'd told them she'd just come out of a psych hospital. I believe he said she was going back? He said she'd been diagnosed as a depressive(?) schizophrenic. He said she'd attempted suicide. He said she probably fired every gun in the house and was gun competent. What more did he need to say?

That is because he couldn't explain why she could do that- because she had NO REASON to- because she didn't do it.  He also played on the word 'nutter' to describe the utter violence involved which could explain her guilt.

She did it because she was a nutter? and Nutters do that kind of thing= must be her- no reason needed!

"Depressive psychopath" which is worse and enough to give any cop the shakes...

Thank-you, Myster. I knew it was something with "depressive" attached to it.

They relied on what he said about there being guns inside WHF and that Sheila knew how to use them, The timing was more for their own safety and they followed protocol.

He also managed to casually mention he saw someone moving inside the house...

He painted her close enough to Annie Oakley for them to think she'd come out blasting them with a gun in each hand.....................

I don't think he told them that, he didn't mention it in his police interview either. He made more of that later when he was desparate.

Was it only Jeremy who thought he'd seen movement inside the house?
