Some interesting previous discussion on the moped.

Do you know whether or not Luke had had any previous "run ins" with the police?

Not yet but he was only 14, I'm sure he had all of that ahead of him with the knife carrying, violent temper, threats, assaults and drug dealing. He had come to the attention of school psychiatrists however. This was a boy totally out control and free to do what he wanted. He was the man of his house. His mum was still buying him knives even after the murder and lied about his age so he could get a tattoo at 15. Showed the manager of the tattoo parlour Shane's ID and swore it was Luke.

The previous discussion linked by John better puts in to words what I was saying about Sandra's claims and seems to be based on to the same posts on the blue forum that I was remembering. I was only active on the blue forum around that time so wasn't sure if it had been covered here. Thanks.

Someone said there is a path from Roan's Duke to Luke's but I don't see it

See below for path.  You follow this path from Newbattle Road then veer north up into Newbattle Abbey Crescent.

(Note: You have to zoom in until path appears)

GD had an appointment at the job centre on the afternoon Jodi was killed and phoned JF to pick him up on the bike after at 4.20. Therefore there is no way that they could have believed that they were at the v at the same time.

And Shane originally told police he was home at 3:40pm but went back and changed it to 5 o'clock after being "corrected" by his mother. Are witnesses only allowed to forget exact times if their surname is Mitchell?

How long would it take Luke to reach his home along this path?

Got it, cheers. So in theory Luke could have gone along that path, then gone through the stream (wash off any blood), and up into Newbattle Abbey Crescent. But he'd still have to cross the street to get to his house I think? Either way, Sandra Lean's claims in the doc about this are clearly wrong

In his first statement on the 3rd of July Shane said in his statement he got home from work at 3.30pm then his friend reminded him that he had helped him work on his car.

Was there a statement from the friend ? Don’t know but there should have been, if the police were doing their job properly.

There are any number of ways to get from the murder scene to Newbattle Abbey Crescent - anyone brought up in Easthouses/Newbattlle, etc would know every inch of those woods.

In the recent documentary, SF said that the ideal escape route would be across the field and into the woods towards the college - he said you could do it in 2 minutes.

Usain Bolt would struggle to do that.

Quite a bit of activity involving police at Roan's Dyke at the moment, apparently.

I’m told that it’s a suicide but not sure of it’s veracity.

The murderous art that unmasked a cruel killer by Kenny Farquharson for The Times - Jan 2005

Quote
It was the suspect himself who sparked this line of inquiry. In the opening days of the investigation in the summer of 2003, as detectives went about their door-to-door inquiries in Dalkeith, Mitchell had spoken to officers in the street about music containing murderous themes. Displaying the arrogance he was to show throughout the case, he asked if the policeman knew the song Kim by the rapper Eminem.

What exactly did Luke Mitchell say to the police and what does Sandra Lean write about this in her book?

Quote
Both teenagers had a taste for the macabre. They would gather in Greyfriars Kirkyard in the centre of Edinburgh — generally regarded as one of the most eerily atmospheric graveyards in Scotland. There they would smoke cannabis — Mitchell always seemed to have a plentiful supply — among the ancient tombstones.

For some of the group that hung around Greyfriars, the surroundings whetted their appetite for horror. One of them was Sonny Devlin, from the Restalrig area of Edinburgh, who at 15 was a year older than the Dalkeith kids. By some grisly coincidence, it was June 30, 2003, the evening of Jodi’s murder, that Devlin and a younger friend chose to break into a Greyfriars tomb known as the last resting place of George “Bloody” Mackenzie, a 17th-century prosecutor of the Covenanters.

There was more. Detectives discovered that two days after the killing, having already been questioned and forensically examined, Mitchell wound down by buying and watching a Manson DVD, The Golden Age of Grotesque.

It had a 15 certificate, and he bought it at his local Sainsbury’s along with some family shopping.
Dec 2004
‘‘MARILYN MANSON’s DVD ‘THE GOLDEN AGE OF GROTESQUE’ was played in court yesterday (December 23) in the trial of a teenager accused of murdering schoolgirl JODI JONES.
The DVD – which shows two girls tied together near a track and struggling as hoods were placed over their heads – was seized by police from the home of Luke Mitchell, 16, who denies murdering Jodi on June 30 last year.
He told detectives he bought the DVD two days after 14-year-old Jodi’s naked and bloodstained body was found in woods near her home in Dalkeith, near Edinburgh.
The High Court in Edinburgh was told that during the police interview on July 4 last year Mitchell also chatted about his musical interests, including Marilyn Manson.
Mitchell, who was then aged 14, told them he had bought Manson’s CD, and bonus DVD, at a supermarket.
