These two individuals appear to have a chequered history of child abuse and extortion to name but two offences.  They were originally arrested at a two-bedroom villa within a gated community at Sotogrande, near the famous Valderrama Golf Resort on 28 June 2007.

It seems that when the Spanish police arrested them originally and searched the property in 2007 they found incriminating documents relating to the scam to extort money from the McCanns.

It is not clear whether they were released on bail in 2007 or how they managed to evade police until now.

O Tribunal da Relação de Lisboa ordenou esta quinta-feira a prisão preventiva de um italiano procurado pelas autoridades francesas e italianas e a morar em Cascais com a mulher, portuguesa, que vai permanecer em prisão domiciliária, disse à Lusa fonte policial.

A PSP deteve na quarta-feira um casal luso-italiano, Danielo Chemello e Aurora Pereira Vaz, procurados pela justiça francesa e pela italiana, conhecido das autoridades por tentar extorquir dinheiro aos pais de Madeleine McCann em troca de informações sobre o paradeiro da filha.

Os detidos foram hoje presentes ao Tribunal da Relação, que decretou que Danielo Chernello vai permanecer em território nacional em prisão preventiva até à sua extradição e que a portuguesa ficará em prisão domiciliária e irá cumprir pena de prisão em Portugal.

De acordo com uma fonte da PSP, este casal está referenciado por ter tentado receber o dinheiro que os pais da menina inglesa que desapareceu no Algarve em 2007 ofereciam a quem desse pistas sobre o seu paradeiro.

Segundo a mesma fonte, o casal é procurado pelas autoridades francesas por alegadamente estar envolvido num esquema de associação criminosa para conspiração para assassinar um juiz francês que o condenou a 18 meses de prisão por maus-tratos à filha, pena que ambos efetivamente cumpriram.

Em Itália, Danielo Chemello e Aurora Pereira Vaz são suspeitos de tentativa de homicídio do ex-marido da portuguesa e de, em 2001, terem contratado um antigo polícia para esconder droga no carro do homem, numa tentativa de o incriminar, plano que falhou, adiantou a fonte.

O casal vivia «pelo menos desde janeiro na zona do Estoril», sob identidade falsa e, de acordo com a fonte, preparava-se para mudar de local, como tinham feito há quatro anos, quando deixou o Algarve.

Os dois filhos do italiano e da portuguesa, menores de idade, encontravam-se na residência do Estoril e foram entregues a casas de acolhimento para jovens.

«Os menores nunca foram vistos pelos vizinhos e julgamos que nem sequer andavam na escola», afirmou a fonte.

Well, I expect that CdaM and others piggybacked on the Madeleine news.

I'm aware that they were wanted for alleged crimes in Italy and France anyway, so it's probably not why they were arrested.

However, were they ever cleared of the alleged extortion attempt? Kate mentions it in her book p. 193.
