As far as I am aware Sy  have stated that they are treating the case as an abduction by a stranger.

Are you privy to what is going on behind the scenes at the Yard, Angelo?  I would imagine that the so-called Tapas 9 were ruled out a long time ago.  Indeed, DCI Redwood told us on 4 July that neither Kate and Gerry McCann nor their holiday friends were persons of interest.
