« on: July 08, 2012, 10:18:36 AM »
My pc is running so slow its unreal, i have done a virus scan, nothing found, i have un-installed programmes i dont need etc, it hasnt made any difference.

My pc came with windows pre loaded, i think i may need to reinstall windows, i hear its a big job and im clueless on such things, anyone suggest anything else? i looked at System restore but it doesnt go back far enough to fix the problem.

I know i will loose all my files etc if i reinstall windows, im not bothered about that.

I only have the bare minimum on the pc, Jack.

There is hardly anything installed on it, only what it came with and the itunes for our iphones. Im not bothered if i loose what i have saved on it, i can always get it all again.

Will windows talk me through any unistallation? I have never done it before.

I am not sure if they will talk you through it, my hotmail/Microsoft was hacked last week and was a nightmare to sort out, as far as I could see they give no number to phone, I had to sort out by messages and then they can take 24 hours to sort out.
I was not impressed

Have you got any computer geeks that live nearby?

Have you done a disk cleanup, browsing history delete and a defrag?
Is there anything running in the background? Try task manager and see and if so close it down.
If that doesn't help, I'll have a rethink.
Have you also tried switching the computer and internet connection off at the plug socket for 60 seconds and rebooting?

If not, I use a computer shop near me, they usually open about 10ish in the morning but I'd leave it until half past, Lee might be able to help you via remote access/log me in, his number is 0114 2634544. Just tell him her who's down there every 2 minutes has given you the number, when he's stopped laughing, he'll help you.

Andy.......make sure your internet settings are set to delete history after closing down the browser otherwise you will have a pile of unwanted crap stored.  That may be the problem.

To check go to Internet Options on either Firefox or Internet Explorer.

In Internert Explorer check the box Delete browsing history on exit and then click OK tab to save.

In Firefox go to Options, click on the Privacy tab and then go to History.  Select Use custom settings for history and select whichever options you want and select Clear history when Firefox closes. Click on the OK tab to save.

Job done!

That's great news Andrea.  I will need to do some housekeeping on my computers soon as they are also beginning to slow slightly.  It is amazing how much crap you can pick up simply by browsing the internet.  As someone suggested earlier don't forget to set your Internet Explorer or Firefox options to delete history after shutting down.

I have an AVG PC tune up program which works really nicely.  I've tried a few of these things in the past and have never been very impressed, however this one is really good.  I forget how much it cost, but I can't imagine that I would have paid anymore than 20 quid for it.  It cleans the registry, optimizes Internet speed settings, defrags, etc etc.

I'm due for renewing AVG and it's £25.00, I can't forget how much I paid for it last year.
