The point I was trying to make, is that it was alright to anchor offshore, in that local area.
 IIRC, Lagos is only about a 10 mins drive from PDL.

My thanx to all who have input here.  There is much good stuff here to be grateful for.  I have now chunked through all 21 pages, so once again 

I will be writing on shininginluz.wordpress.com about what I have found out, and giving full credit to contributors on this forum, given that most of what I know comes from here.

Since the big news at the moment is which fishes are being fried in Faro by whom about what, I don't expect to publish before the weekend.  There's just too much fun and games going on down the coast for the time being.

We have no proof of Captain Rod's ability to command a ship or navigate, apart from possibly some oil rig working.

Equally, we have no proof of his ownership of a vessel, or hiring of a vessel, or anything otherwise nautical.

Fact.  I have personally seen a luxury yacht moored out at sea from Luz.  Yes, there is no harbour.  The yacht simply dropped anchor.  The owners/guests come ashore for lunch.  The captain stays aboard the vessel.

The Captain Rod story suffers from extreme weakness.  How to find Madeleine, how to find an entry point to 5A, how to snatch her in with all of those checks.  Please feel free to discuss as you like.  That is your right.

This thread started off with Roderick in the Algarve with a motorised home.  I'm going to be running with that variant.

This bay of calm waters is very prone to the practice of water sports: windsurfing, kite surfing, sailing and diving, there are several support facilities available to vacationers.

I think it is about time you accepted that Praia Da Luz is easily accessible for exit and entry by sea and illicit cargoes are sometimes carried.


The result of an operation carried out by a department of the Judiciary Police ended with a total of 1.5 tonnes of hashish being seized in the village of Praia da Luz, western Algarve, last Saturday.

Judiciary Police and Maritime Authorities surprised the drug smugglers as they were unloading the large packages of hashish from an 8.5 metre speed boat onto a four-wheel-drive jeep in Praia da Luz in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A total of four men, all of Spanish nationality and aged around 20 years old, were arrested, and two vehicles and two speed boats were seized, as well as the drugs.

So the logistics for this start to become interesting. Picking up on s-luz's comments do we have reason to believe that Cap'n Rod owned an ocean going yacht or even had the certification and the wherewithal required to hire one?. It is after all a little bit more stringent than taking out a Hoseason's cruiser on the Thames.
Whilst the plan is not impossible it starts to look improbable because of the logistics and time factor involved. Like being spotted carrying out one the many activities required. Complicated plans have a nasty habit of going wrong. I have ignored the bit about whether there is any evidence of him having been in PdL or environs at the appropriate time and who his mates were. Even drawing a motor boat onto a trailer by ones self is no simple task.

I'm not entering any debate about whether or not Roderick McDonald was in the Algarve in 2007 ... and I don't care if his 'ocean going qualifications' enable him to captain a tanker or a wind up toy in a boating pond.

I'm bemused by the apparent lifestyle of that person. 

Apparently "on the run" from authorities worldwide.  He was able to finance moves from country to country and from continent to continent and between his moves there seems to be no apparent evidence of exactly where he was at any given moment in time.
To travel as he did he required to have access to money.

If SY specifically want to interview him ... I am sure they have their reasons.
