I wouldn't consider Odiáxere to be close to the Barragem de Bravua lake, its actually 9km distant.   What I do find coincidental however is that Odiáxere features earlier in this case as it was there that the two GNR officers who attended Madeleine's disappearance were originally investigating a suspected breaking and entry when the call came for them to go to Praia da Luz.

Could these two incidents be connected?

Yes they could be connected. I would liked to have seen the June letter in the files. They needed cadaver dogs in that search. The lake is an obvious spot close to Luz. The gardener said the letter he found had Madeleine Beth McCann written on it.

Wednesday 06 June 2007 Kate and Gerry's exit from Berlin is delayed when the Portugese police say they have received some information that they need to be consulted on. Gerry dismisses this as 'nothing of interest' and it means they miss 2 TV programmes due to arriving in Amsterdam 3 hours late.
They do manage to find time to catch up briefly with a few old friends from the time they spent in Amsterdam.

Thursday 07 June 2007 After the scheduled meetings, Gerry catches up with 'a friend of mine who was attending a medical conference in Amsterdam'. It is speculated that this was Matthew Oldfield who is believed to have been attending the Euromedlab 2007 event in the city at that time. See figure on the left of picture below.

Monday 11 June 2007 An anonymous letter and map are received in the offices of The Telegraaf, a Dutch newspaper, which claim to show where Madeleine is buried. The reporters immediately contact police and hand over the documents. A decision is made not to publish the map or hand it over to third parties.

Thursday 14 June 2007 Initial searches of scrubland indicated by the letter to The Telegraaf do not reveal anything unusual.

Friday 15 June 2007 Police with sniffer dogs search scrubland 9 miles from Praia da Luz where Madeleine's body is reported to be but the hunt is called off after only 4 hours. Extensive search finds nothing but a towel.

"The information indicated an area 15km from the place of the disappearance of the little child.

Barragem de Bravua to apartment 5A = 13.2km

Letter searches to apartment 5A = 13.75km

Letter searches to Barragem de Bravua = 5-6km

Smithman carrying a child in his arms checked his watch after passing the Smith family and the time was 10:03. Both are still unidentified 10 years later.

Please keep your shirt on.  I did not say "back dated".  I said I found it interesting that the article dates back to Oct 2007, and that is quite different.  It means the origin was well before the "rain-sodden" note on the 1st anniversary, which is actually very important.

Some stuff on AliSuper may have been pruned, but I don't remember and I don't care.

The nearest AliSuper I can locate, to this point, was in Bensafrim.

Final thought, wasn't the barragem do Arade search by some lawyer claiming his client had informed him that Madeleine was in a deep, dark place?

Sorry I misread what you wrote - in a rush today but no excuse. Yes that's correct about a lawyer who lied (shock horror lol) about that Barragem do Arade search. He was Informed first then it turned out to be a dream or some nonsense. I wouldn't give anything to do with Metodo 3 the time of day. If you were going to search a lake then the closest Barragem de Bravua is the obvious one.

It is interesting that this story seems to have dated back to Oct 2007.  Was this before or after the barragem do Arade story?

Bensafrim telephone mast is activated many times in the files by people simply on the A22 moving between Luz - Portimão and Luz - Faro.

You might wish to update the graphic with the approx. location of Colinas Verdes and Odiáxere to let folks see how close Odiáxere is not.

Streetview does not cover Colinas Verdes.  Shame, as that might clarify where the nearest AliSuper was.

Yes the locations of the Bensafrim telephone masts on a map would be much appreciated. Thank you.

That's the current list.  Note it does not mention the two AliSupers that were in Luz in 2007.  I believe there was one in Espiche in 2007, which I have not looked for as it does not seem relevant.  The list does not have the Bensafrim one, and I cannot find that one, only a villa rental nearby stating there is (or more likely was) an AliSuper in Bensafrim.

The chain went bust around 2011, and seems to have resurrected itself with fewer stores in its current incarnation.  Hence no current Luz or Bensafrim versions.

Yes the locations of the Bensafrim telephone masts on a map would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I have found (I think) two.  Heriberto alerted me to that fact that each of the 3 networks used their own masts, so I am missing one.

These two are on a hill N of Bensafrim.  In streetview, go to NE Bensafrim and look N.

I know the PJ graphic shows the Bensafrim mast to be much further S.  However, other PJ maps are clearly in error, and I cannot find any suitable location for a mast in the area they pinpoint.

From memory, your records relate to 'Bensafrim central', and these two are definitely not in central Bensafrim, but I have not found one in central Bensafrim.

And that is why Heriberto's records are better.

Thanks. I only need a rough location on this map. Black spot is where the June De Telegraaf letter searches took place. 5 to 6 km from Barragem de Bravua. If you were at Barragem de Bravua would you be on a Bensafrim mast?

I don't know.

Google Earth makes the distance 5.4 km.  The phone engineer in the PJ files says mobile phone radius is up to 8km in the country, thus max range has not been exceeded.

However, I don't know if there is a nearer mast that should be picking up the signal.

Or if the relevant phone could, or could not, operate through the Bensafrim masts.

Lots of variables.

That's great thanks for your help. It looks like to get to the lake you would possibly activate Odiaxere mast and Bensafrim so that is what I will check next.

Graphic shows location of an Odiáxere mast  (SW entrance to town.)  The distance to Bravura is 7.2km, on the upper range limit.  The A22 is closer.

I have added a red dot for the Bensafrim mast.

There is a further mast (red dot) beside the A22at 4.5km from Bravura, almost on the Odiáxere-Bravura line.

I'm guessing (!!!) it is the one called Monte Alto, even though it is nearer to Monte Ruivo than Monte Alto.  I don't know which operators can use that mast.

De Telegraaf Letter June 2007

October 2007

A search is also expected of the dense woodland and isolated dwellings around the reservoir - known locally as Barragem da Bravura, literally the Reservoir of the Wilderness - which leading detective Paulo Rebelo believes was not combed carefully enough in the days following the four-year-old's disappearance.

According to Portuguese newspaper the Correio Da Manha, the "meticulous" Rebelo has ordered his reinforced team to pay "special attention" to the area around the jagged reservoir.

November 2014

A letter handed in to Portuguese police claimed to know the final resting place of Madeleine McCann, it has emerged.

An employee of the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz found the letter in the doorway of apartment 5A, where Madeleine vanished, on the first anniversary of her disappearance.

The handyman, who we are not naming but was formerly employed by the holiday resort, immediately handed in the note to the police in May 2008.

He described the letter as being headed: “Madeleine Beth McCann”, with a description below of how she had been dumped in the Barragem da Bravura reservoir, nine miles from the holiday resort.

He said: “It was raining that night so it was soaking wet when I found it. It clearly said Madeleine’s name at the top. It was written in Portuguese.

“Beneath it was a location for what it claimed was her final resting place.

“I spoke to the other staff about it and they said to hand it in to the Portuguese police. I gave it to them, but I have no idea what they did about it.

“It would be the perfect place to hide a body.”

I don't buy this 'dumped in a reservoir' story because who in their right mind would take the risk of abducting a kid only to get rid of them in such a manner?   The entire episode was probably invented as a distraction at a time when investigators were getting too close to what really befell Maddie.

Was this theory the bone supported by the psychic Correia.

A truly amazing man.

Wasn't there was a note found on the road outside 5a claiming that Maddie was put in the reservoir.  The Portuguese police checked the reservoir a few days after the disappearance on the basis that a body would rise to the surface.

To put Correia into context, he wasn't involved with searches at a reservoir until Feb 2008 and that was the more distant River Arade Dam near Silves.
