He was embroiled in a torture case concerning the mother of the only other missing child case he appears to have ever been involved in. Hence, my earlier comment that it might have been better if he'd been whisked off to handle a high-profile case of a different nature elsewhere at the earliest opportunity.

She was unreliable due to her being pressurized and used. She carried that weight for a long time (crying in the McCann reconstruction in 2009). There's no doubt she had a guilty conscience thinking she could have saved Madeleine and wanting to help in any way to catch that man. Jane will be happy that the man she saw was in fact innocent.

You can say what you wish mercury, but most honest people would not think that a lying cop was fit to do his job.  I know that his perjury was not proven at that point, but there was at least one big question mark over him.

I doubt many Police Forces in other Countries would have put him in charge of such a case.  In fact I would have thought that most Forces would have put him on temporary leave until after the Torture Trial.

Well we certainly know of two who lie.  One is Amaral and the other is Tavares - both with criminal convictions to prove it.   And they were the Lead Investigator and his 2nd in command conducting the McCann case.  Jeez.

you will find there was a lot more brutality and police corruption in other countries...Portugal included...we only have to look at Cipriano. I simply cannot see a suspect appearing in a british court looking like that.
