Has xenophobia played a large part in the investigation?
« on: July 02, 2015, 01:42:19 PM »
The arrogance exhibited by the McCanns towards the Portuguese police is for the most part the same displayed by their most ardent supporters.  The Tweedledee and Tweedledum comments so considered by Kate McCann in her book is a fine example of this xenophobia.

It says so much about that group of people, none of it flattering.

Its true but.  The way some Brits treat foreigners in their own land is appalling imo.

Agreed, caused by basic ignorance in the wider sense of the word I guess.

A bit off topic but:
I overheard this comment some 20 years ago on an island, about 2/3 the size of Essex, surrounded by 70 odd million square kilometres of Indian Ocean:-  "There's too much fish on this menu, Brian".
Someone was going to be bloody hungry come home time.

In what way did the McCanns "badly treat" the Portuguese?

If you're critical of the police in your own country then that's just being critical of the police, however if you're critical of the police in another country, then that's xenophobia - is that how it works?

!!

Well spotted! And besides these kind of irreverence are sparse. It all comes down to ignorance, low intelligence and hatred.

Parsons from the tabloids  got his commupance pdq, so that was good, at least.

Many British people are xenophobic, perhaps fueled by our tabloid press;

UN Human Rights Chief urges U.K. to tackle tabloid hate speech, after migrants called “cockroaches”

GENEVA (24 April 2015) – After decades of sustained and unrestrained anti-foreigner abuse, misinformation and distortion, and in the wake of a recent article in the Sun newspaper calling migrants “cockroaches,” the UN Human Rights Chief on Friday urged the U.K. authorities, media and regulatory bodies to take steps to curb incitement to hatred by British tabloid newspapers, in line with the country’s obligations under national and international law.

Zeid noted that the Sun article was simply one of the more extreme examples of thousands of anti-foreigner articles that have appeared in UK tabloids over the past two decades. - See more at: http://www.ohchr.org/RU/NewsEvents/Pages/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=15885&LangID=R#sthash.na7a2bLO.dpuf

the British press for some reason attacked the Portuguese from day one, without knowing any facts
