Lifting the shutters from the outside.
« on: May 17, 2017, 09:24:47 AM »
There is this video of a man lifting the shutters from the outside.  Did you know it was possible to do this?

We have several threads on this subject easily found by searching "shutter" as a topic item but as they haven't been posted on for a while it will do no harm to refresh our thoughts with a new thread.

These shutters can be quite easily lifted from outside if A) there are no locking snibs fitted and B) locking snibs are fitted but aren't engaged. I think we previously established that the bog standard shutters fitted at Ocean Club did not have such a locking mechanism.

From the video, they obviously won't go all the way up  and won't stay up of their own accord

That's right, the window has to be slid open in order for someone to reach in and pull the shutter strap and wind up the mechanism as demonstrated here by Heriberto.

The crime scene showed the shutters stuck after Dianne Webster tried to raise and twisted them.

Reply    “I think, I think I got it up so far but it became sort of err twisted. But everybody was in such a panic really.”

The shutters were down NOT raised when DW arrived around 5 minutes after the alarm.

Smithman carrying a child in his arms checked his watch after passing the Smith family and the time was 10:03. Both are still unidentified 10 years later.

I wouldn't want to blame that on Dianne.

I noticed this was shown on the Panorama programme. However, Heri's demonstration can only be done if the window is unlocked, to be able to slide it open to reach the winding mechanism. Do these windows have locks on the inside? Please ,please don't tell me the windows were not locked!  Leaving three children alone in an apartment with unlocked windows on ground floor...I am too scared to think about that.

Also Why did panorama not check Dianes statement?

They do indeed have locks on the inside.

They left the back door unlocked, weren't sure about the front door, nor the windows.

Yes, but no longer as that window now has an iron grill in front of it.

Yes Robbie read the previous posts re the opening the shutters. The window needs to be unlocked to reach the mechanism to open it.

I think we established all this in an earlier thread, John.

That Brits did not understand shutters of this type and assumed that they were incapable of being opened from outside

It also seems that Kate and Gerry were not alone in not checking whether the windows were locked or not

From:  DIANNE WEBSTERS ROGATORY INTERVIEW

http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/DIANE-WEBSTER-2.htm

4078    “Therefore you didn’t have any cause to pass by Madeleine’s bedroom window and you didn’t therefore notice the shutters. During your stay in your apartment where you, Fiona and Dave were, did you ever leave the doors or windows open?”

Reply    “Err no but err after Madeleine disappeared I, I checked the err some of the windows in our apartment and they weren’t locked, we hadn’t, we hadn’t thought of checking them you know, when we arrived in the resort to check the windows and the cleaners must have left them unlocked.”

I have been lucky enough to have travelled widely, staying at all sorts of hotels and in my experience, when one enters the room for the first time everything is securely locked.   Seems the cleaner of thes particular flats at OC was lax ... or maybe she hadn't been trained properly.

One expects everything to be clean and everything secure when one starts holiday and takes over their accomodation for the first time.

Does that mean we can propose the same thing happened in the McCann's apartment?

OMG they never even bothered to check the windows are not locked at night when they went out and left their children alone!!   This just gets worse!

So lets assume the cleaner opened the window, why would she do that? because Kate says the window and shutters were closed all week...

But neither of them say they checked the window for security on the Thursday night.
