A question of common sense?

A simple question for members.  If you put your children to bed for the night and later when you go to check on them you aren't happy with the situation, what is the very first thing you would do?

1. Open the door and go into the bedroom.
2. Satisfy yourself that what ever made you feel uneasy is not there.

I think it would depend on your degree of unhappiness vs your desire to be elsewhere.

What I notice about Gerry is he changes over time.  You can't identify what he thought at the time but a later date he will attach more importance to what he saw at the time, but it didn't click then but it does later. 

So the question is first to identify what he thought at the time.

Ah!  I think I can see where this is leading now but I won't spoil it by revealing the missing element.

If any of the children had been liable to wake up early evening then it wouldn't have made sense to go to dinner and leave the children alone, would it? Even so, it's Gerry's first thought after noticing the open door;

having then put together the thought of MADELEINE having got up to go to sleep in his bedroom so as to avoid the noise produced [created] by her siblings.

He checks all three and all three are sleeping peacefully. So it seems it wasn't Madeleine who opened the door, so how did it move? Gerry, like his daughter, 'moves on'. He asks a question, fails to get an answer and drops the subject. He visits the bathroom and leaves the apartment. The strange case of the moving door is forgotten, it seems.

Having brought up three children my thought would have been that Madeleine had visited the bathroom. My children did that and scampered back to bed afterwards. We haven't been told whether she ever did that, and her father doesn't seem to consider that possibility.

Everything else was normal, the blinds, curtains and windows closed, very dark, there only being the light that came from the lounge.

I wouldn't turn the light on in case I woke them. Unless the room was pitch black you would be able to see their shapes in bed.

No, I also wouldn't have turned on the light for fear of waking one of them up unnecessarily & having to hang around until sure the child was properly asleep again.
The parents' concern was crying at that time, nothing more. No crying was reported during Gerry's check.
