I tended to think of homicide as all caused of death by killing as in this definition "Homicides include all killings of humans. Many homicides, such as murder and manslaughter, violate criminal laws. Others, such as a killing committed in justified self-defense, are not criminal."   
So murder, manslaughter and justified self defense are all under the heading of homicide.
