I realise that some questions are difficult to answer truthfully without contradicting your previously stated position so no worries.

And what if you knew that your scattershot approach to publicity may harm your child ? That the abductor may, say, harm her eye ?

From the Vanity Fayre interview with Gerry.

“It has in fact been so counterproductive that, as winter approached, Portuguese attorney general Fernando Pinto Monteiro suggested that one way or another the McCanns were responsible for their child’s death. Specifically he said that if indeed Madeleine had been kidnapped, it was the carefully contrived publicity engineered by her parents that likely sealed her fate. “With the whole world having Madeleine’s photo,” he observed, any abductor would have been pushed to such a degree that “there’s a greater probability of the little girl being dead than alive.”

I think that’s just him heaping cruelty on cruelty tbh.  Where is the evidence that abducted children are killed as a direct result of any publicity campaign to find them?  And there have been many well publicised missing children whose faces we are now well familiar with, I guess all their parents are ultimately responsible for their deaths too!  What a load of tosh.

A bit naive.

This is the same AG who ‘cleared’ the McCanns in the Archiving Report. Are you saying his opinion, based on vast experience, is flawed ?

Gerry admitted himself that their campaign could have harmed pushed the alleged abductor into harming Madeleine. The McCanns had neither the experience nor the professional police advice in order to publicise their child’s disappearance in the correct way. When a child is missing believing that you are doing the right thing, especially when desperate, is never a justification for making bad, amateur, decisions.

"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

Are you suggesting that Goncalo Amaral used a 'scattershot approach to publicity' by requesting permission to release publicity about Madeleine ... including information about the distinguishing feature of her eye?

he says, the iris “is Madeleine’s only true distinctive feature. Certainly we thought it was possible that this could potentially hurt her or”—he grimaces—“her abductor might do something to her eye.… But in terms of marketing, it was a good ploy.”

Let’s see what the AG actually said shall we, rather than a couple of snippets wrapped around a VF journalist’s prose. From the excerpt you provided what he is actually credited as saying is “with the whole world having Madeleine’s photo” and “there’s a greater probability of the girl being dead than alive”.   So, I don’t see him heaping blame on the McCanns for her death actually, perhaps you can provide the full quote?

Either you publicise your missing child’s disappearance with photos, including distinguishing features or you don’t.  So which is the correct thing to do McCann critics? Photos or no photos?

Some people are saying the McCann's went about trying to find their child the wrong way,   it is so easy to say that when never being in the position the McCann's were in.    Take Kerry Needham a parent who WAS in the same position,  she said she would have welcomed the media attention that the McCann's had for Madeleine,  that is a woman who was faced with the same horrific dilemma,   she would have done the same she said in her book.

So instead of putting the McCann's down,  try and picture yourself in the same situation as the McCann's were.  Their child missing,   in a foreign  country,   the Police who didn't want any publicity.  What would YOU actually do if you saw the time ticking away on your child?

For those who say they would have stayed silent left it all to the police,  remember they are probably the ones who say the McCann's didn't join the search party when they were giving statements to the police,  the ones who say they should have ran around Portugal searching for Madeleine,   drawing attention to themselves,  and not obeying what the Police had said.   Do they not think that even if the McCann's had stayed silent,  someone who was in the search party for Madeleine wouldn't have mentioned it to a relative at home?   Something like that would never have been kept a secret,    the time for secrets had passed.

Which doesn't answer the question. You appear to be suggesting that the Press runs in terror from Carter Ruck, I am suggesting that if anyone being protected by a big libel lawyer were to slip up in any way then the press who have been previously on the receiving end of that Lawyer will go for the throat. If you think otherwise I would say that is a bit naive.

The press are held in check not just by Carter Ruck but by the law of libel... You are now introducing a hypothetical situation where  CR run away..lawyers do not run away from easy money... Libel the mccanns and they know they will be sued

As I’ve said before, if the McCanns had been media shy and refused to share details of their missing daughter with the public this would almost certainly have been taken as evidence of guilt by McCann critics, IMO, so therefore as usual they are damned if they do, and damned if they don’t.
