Title: Thou shalt not tweet in anger, says church...
Post by: Holly Goodhead on July 22, 2019, 10:52:16 AM
I am not remotely interested in organised religion of any description however I did read the following article in The Times a couple of weeks ago which resonated with our online community here.  I will quote the article verbatim:

The Church of England is to issue its first set of digital commandments to combat "cynicism and abuse" on social media.

They will be outlined today by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, in a live video message from Facebook's British headquarters.

The church has drawn up a "digital charter" reflecting five Christian values that it will push to see honoured online and ten "community guidelines", aimed at all internet users.  People will be asked to post a link on social media to say that they pledge to abide by them.

"One of [social media's] many joys is that it is immediate, interactive, conversational and open-ended," the guidance says.  "This opportunity comes with downsides if users do not apply the same common sense, kindness and sound judgement which we would use in a face-to-face encounter."

Among the commandments are:

- Speak to others online as you would speak to them in person and treat them as you would want them to treat you.

- Remember that your posts can remain online for ever and you can be held accountable for them.

- Be aware of child safety when posting online.

- Give credit if citing or sharing others' work.

The church said that the rules were "a resource for Christians, people of other faiths and people of no faith".  The archbishop said "Sociaal media has transformed the way we live our lives...Each time we interact online we have the opportunity either to add to currents of cynicism or abuse or to choose instead to share light and grace".  The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu said: "We are saying that the church wishes to be present in the digital sphere and be the same force for social cohesion which it strives to be in the real world."

Archbishop Welby will take part today in a live Q&A with Nicola Mendelshon the head of Facebook in Europe and the Middle East.

This Forum has rules which should ensure good behaviour but some people still seem unable to treat others with respect. By their points shall ye know them.

No burning bush messages from God on samsUng/apple tablets?

I liked the last one:Give credit if citing or sharing others' work.  Are they claiming it was  the Church of England who thought these safety measure up or perhaps it was an IT professional body who has been saying this for years as online etiquette, or corporate governance policies in place for years?

To the church onwards and upwards!!

No doubt the church has an army of advisers and consultants internally and externally.

I've edited a few posts this morning.

I need to make it clear going forward I expect everyone to take on board the above.  Anyone who repeatedly makes personal comments that I consider likely to disrupt the smooth running of the forum will start to earn points with the potential for a permanent ban.

Glad to hear that. I am praying it will be applied across the forum.

I know a healthy debate - it is ok to challenge the post written by the poster- not the poster. I will continue on that vain. I do not care If I get a ban for that. ^*&&

The church can make no such claim-  it was a professional body (USA)who wrote IT etiquette when the web was in it's infancy- not the church of England!  This forum has been running longer than the Archbishops claims and the rules are very clear!

BTW this has nothing to do with MBM and her disappearance.

Has anyone ever had a permanent ban in the history of this forum?

Several people who have been banned seem to turn up again after a while, like a bad penny.

Yes it will be applied across the forum.

The above just sets out what to most will be a common sense approach to online communication.

This thread was started to communicate and manage interpersonal communications regarding this particular board which is currently the most active by member and post count.

Yes and to the best of my knowledge I do not believe the individuals concerned have returned.

Several people who have been banned seem to turn up again after a while, like a bad penny.

A ban is obviously a last resort but a necessary tool for managing a forum.  If such action is taken then we will endeavor to maintain the ban if appropriate.

I agree.  The Church might be better occupied in promoting the original Ten Commandments.  These appear to encompass a lot of what happens on this Forum.

Posts will be managed and decided upon by content only not whether or not someone is intoxicated which mods would have no idea about.

If you have any complaints about any particular mod, mods in general or the general way in which the forum is managed then I suggest you pm John directly who no doubt consider your feedback and in return feedback to the mods where appropriate.

I don't think it's fair to continually bother him

I couldn't agree more.  We are all adults and a lot of what I see here I do not believe would go on in face-to-face communication.

Maybe but who has defined sniping?  What you think is sniping is it the same as Davel?
What is accusing?  Is asking someone if they have been drinking an accusation?

To me an accusation would be saying "You have been drinking". Not "Have you been drinking?"

That's one example that came to mind from the overnight pile.  Asking a simple question but having it thrown back at you as an accusation. Classic sniping tactics. Deployed on several occasions.

I disagree with the Hmm being a snipe that is only your interpretation of a post. I use it a s a thinking  like "Hmm I don't thnk so" if I disagree with a post.
 Or Hmm I wonder...

Asking a poster if they have been drinking or on drugs on in therapy in reply to a post is goading and sniping. AND Unworthy of a reply.

I would also say that there are posters who twist words deliberatly, and make personal jibes\comments  to discredit the person without challenging the post backed by different evidence.

That should be stopped hence forth!

I feel if I find a post to be a fantasy without evidence, I am challenging the contents of the post- not attacking the poster!

Just another cop out as far as I can see.  I do delete all Hmms when I see them.

you delete the posts or just the Hmmms?

Have you not missed a lot of trolling and goading and name calling or is it just the Hmm  you will moderate?

Just asking  for future. I will check with John  as this is more of a freedom of speech used in a post issue, rather than goading and sniping. IMO

That must be a sin as well.

It's The Sin of Pride.  The worst Sin of all.

Yep.  We all know what they mean.

No, you don't  you only suppose. Different thing altogether.

Pride is the worst sin? Doesn't seem to get a mention from the main man hiself.

The Ten Commandments
You shall have no other Gods but me.
You shall not make for yourself any idol, nor bow down to it or worship it.
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
You shall remember and keep the Sabbath day holy.
Respect your father and mother.
You must not commit murder.
You must not commit adultery.
You must not steal.
You must not give false evidence against your neighbour.
You must not be envious of your neighbour's goods. You shall not be envious of his house nor his wife, nor anything that belongs to your neighbour.

Sins are a male invention to scare people into giving them money and power over them. Therfore, I do not sin 8**8:/:

I've edited a few posts this morning.

I need to make it clear going forward I expect everyone to take on board the above.  Anyone who repeatedly makes personal comments that I consider likely to disrupt the smooth running of the forum will start to earn points with the potential for a permanent ban.

I notice my reply to a particular horrible personal attack on me has been edited by Eleanor, the attacks are in place so why not just admit you censor at will and it is biased!

Have a care Rob.  You could well be.

Just as a matter of interest, do any other Moderators actually read The Reports.  You could all be better informed if you do.

Yes, fascinating stuff.

I would hardly call it fascinating, but at least one knows what is going on.  So I am glad to hear that you do.

As you are not party to the reports it isn’t really any of your concern.

That, Rob, is the most offensive 'smiley' on the forum.  It should not be available for use imo.

Well why is that.  If there was one showing a "smiley" vomiting that would upset me.

Well I tend not to use them at all.   But if you are not allowed to say it in words say it in emoticons.

I sometimes have difficulty in saying precisely what I mean.  But I have never resorted to Emoticoms.  I see a lot of them as a way in which to be insulting.
I shall have to look at them more closely in future.

I've had a food delivery, but being an affluent pensioner living in the UK I had to pay for it lol.

No, no wine Rob.  But the food is excellent, and better quality than I could afford to buy on my Basic State Pension.

Some ijiot on The Daily Mail said that The Pound has recovered after the election of Boris as PM.  Not against The Euro it hasn't.  The Euro is doing fine.

I have just deleted a couple of letters from a word in a post namely 'sh' which has transformed the word into 'it'.

Please refrain from using foul language and under no circumstances use in a post as a form of aggression when posting with another whose post you disagree with.

I've noticed the post content of one or two here is quite aggressive; please tone it down.
