Victorious Maddie McCann detective writing new book on her disappearance
THE police chief who won a legal battle with the parents of Madeleine McCann is finishing off a second book on the case that criticises the way Scotland Yard handled their investigation.
PUBLISHED: 00:01, Sun, Feb 5, 2017
Goncalo Amaral is busy working on the closing chapters while on a break in Switzerland and is looking for a British publisher.
Last week Portuguese supreme court judges in Lisbon ruled that he could publish his controversial first book on the case, called The Truth Of The Lie.
After Madeleine, then three, disappeared from apartment 5a of the Ocean Club in Praia da Luz on the Algarve on May 3, 2007, Mr Amaral worked as the investigation co-ordinator, pulling together all the strands of police inquiries and working closely with senior officers.
However, he was moved off the case and resigned six months later after accusing British police officers of not fully cooperating with the Portuguese investigation.
He faced financial ruin when the McCanns won legal battles to freeze his assets and stop him distributing The Truth Of The Lie in Portugal.
Mr Amaral used police files to put forward a theory that Madeleine had died in the apartment. The McCanns took legal action on the grounds the claim was not substantiated by the evidence and was defamatory.
They believe that Madeleine is still alive and every effort should be made to find her.
A friend of the author said: “Goncalo took no great pleasure from the court case because he fully expected to win. For him these battles in the courts are important because they protect freedom of expression.
“He could only afford to pay the legal bills thanks to donations, mainly from people in Britain, who have given more than £50,000. With the support in Britain he obviously thinks his second book on the case would sell well if translated into English and he is actively looking for a publisher.
“He would also ask any publisher if they would be interested in publishing his first book in English. “For the time being he is working hard on the second book in Switzerland but he wishes to thank his supporters in the UK for supporting his battle to protect freedom of expression.”
The timeline of events on the evening and night of May 3, 2007, has been examined by Mr Amaral, minute by minute, for a significant part of the book.
The friend added: “He is aware of the public statements made by Scotland Yard in their review and later investigation.
He gives his views on that approach. He has huge respect for Scotland Yard detectives but is critical of some of the things that have been said and done.”
Doctors Kate and Gerry McCann, both 48, of Rothley, Leicestershire, have said they will sue if The Truth Of The Lie is sold in Britain.
===================================================================
It must be heartwarming for his supporters to know he is on a long winter break in Switzerland.

Getting too hot in Portugal, was it, after his inglorious win.

looking for a publisher in britain for his first book...is he serious
About as serious as his promise to donate all unused PJGA fund donations to a children's charity I expect.
A tax haven, I notice. I think he's been there a while.
-
he wont find apublisher in the uk for his first book but lets hope with his new found wealth he self publishes

It is relatively clement here.
The southern end of the depression affecting western Europe is bringing much needed rain to my strawberry pots. Note to self. Must go out and buy some cream - the strawberries are close to ripe.

@)(++(* nothing can stop him writing a new book can it??

I suppose we might as well all join in. No one is listening to our heart felt pleas. And it's all doing my head in anyway.
Report. Delete. Report. Delete. Meanwhile they are building up faster than I can knock them down.

They'll pass A Law in a minute that says you have to buy it, if I have any conception of what goes on in Portugal.

Bearing in mind that part of his downfall concerned almost causing a diplomatic incident with a tirade against the British police ... I await with interest a book detailing his take on British police involvement in Madeleine's case.

He was absolutely right.
The UK police should have advised, but not interfered, and they interfered.

I think the sceptics here just cannot cope with the fact that the mccanns are going to come back stronger after this set back

will be really interesting what G A .....has to say in his new book ..........

' Now the Express has claimed the former chief is putting the finishing touches on his second book.
He is said to be on a break in Switzerland as he finishes it and is looking for a British publisher.

The McCanns are said to be prepared to sue if the book is sold in the UK.

The appeal hearing in Lisbon which ruled against the McCanns was held in private.
A spokesperson from their lawyer's office said: 'This is a big disappointment and very bitter for us and for Mr and Mrs McCann.
But a source close to the exasperated couple said: 'I think the fight is finally over. They want to concentrate on finding Madeleine and don't think they have the time or energy to lodge yet another appeal.' '

No publisher will touch the first book because it is plainly libellous
If his second book makes similar claims no ublisher will touch that either
It really is that simple
The McCanns would love him to publish in the uk

There are other countries who speak English as their first language, and importing books is a cinch.
Then of course we have the internet.
Not forgetting the Mccann's defeat has changed everything.

I would venture to suggest publishers around the world will not be interested.
I wonder how the McCann's might fund libel challenges when that happens.

Amarals side of the story is libellous in the U.K.
The McCanns can make a fortune but you can't accept that because you are consumed with hatred for them
B.S. Read my previous post.
The ball is now in Amaral's court.
People in the UK have already heard the Mccann's whining for nearly 10 years.
-
No UK publisher will touch Amaral's book with a bargepole unless he makes it clear in his book that he no longer suspects the McCanns of hiding their child's body. It's perfectly possible that he has revised his view on their involvement by now anyway. That would really get up his supporters' noses though so perhaps he wouldn't dare admit it.

The McCanns’ lawyers have warned they will take action against anyone who tries to release it in the UK.
Spokesman Clarence Mitchell said: “If it does appear, whoever is responsible will be sued.”
It can be read on the internet at any time so I fail to see the point. In fact, by blocking sale of the Amaral book in the UK they are sending out the message that they have something to hide. They should embrace the book as freedom of speech as ruled upon by the Portuguese Supreme Court and respond accordingly.

Some of the worst advice I've ever seen. The judgement is an absolute disgrace and has no jurisdiction in the UK
the book cannot be published in the UK as it would be deemed libellous here. All this rubbish about freedom of speech from you yet Im not allowed to call anyone stupid on here even if they are

English libel laws changed in 2013/2014.
They were/are considered to be more in keeping with a Third World country than a civilised one which is why a libel judgement in an English court will not be upheld in the USA unless it is libel according to that State's laws.
Cue davel or ferryman saying "libel per se" without knowing what it really means..... 8(>((

Defamation per se[edit]
All states except Arizona, Missouri, and Tennessee recognize that some categories of false statements are so innately harmful that they are considered to be defamatory per se. In the common law tradition, damages for such false statements are presumed and do not have to be proven.
Statements are defamatory per se where they falsely impute to the plaintiff one or more of the following things:[2]
Allegations or imputations "injurious to another in their trade, business, or profession"
Allegations or imputations "of loathsome disease" (historically leprosy and sexually transmitted disease, now also including mental illness)
Allegations or imputations of "unchastity" (usually only in unmarried people and sometimes only in women)
Allegations or imputations of criminal activity (sometimes only crimes of moral turpitude)[12]

Per se, Latin for by its very nature.
In England, Amaral's book would have been blown out of the water.

I guess it would all come down to who was able to prove what.
In the case of USA, would a ruling in one State apply in all others or would they need to be dealt with separately?

Agreed, though that would be for a court to decide.
As I have read elsewhere, a few tweaks here and there and his book might pass through the courts unscathed.

Amaral's career as an author hasn't really put his name in lights, has it?
He has actually written more books than the one ... but who remembers what? I can remember "The English Gag"?? Anyone read that? ... apart from the high court judges.
The sensationalism of the time and his former position as 'top cop' led in great measure to the success of his first book.
Flying by the seat of your pants wears thin if your anecdotal claims don't stand up to scrutiny ... which might be a consideration for a writer of allegedly non-fiction.

Do you really think if the public didn't have a purient interest in the case Kate's tome would have sold as many copies as it did ? Do you really think she'd have made it as a writer under her own steam?

I saw one in a charity shop for 10p, so doesn't look as if much value is put on it. Followers probably have signed copies which might be worth marginally more.

I think the point Brietta was making is that Amaral has chosen author of books (plural) about the McCann case as his new career of choice (despite not being all that good at it). Kate McCann has written one solitary book, not as a career choice but to put money into the Fund to find her daughter. Slightly different I'm sure you'd agree....

She never aspired to a literary career ~ although she proved to be jolly good at it when forced to do it to replenish the almost empty coffers of the fund for her daughter. Amaral does ~ and past efforts might not have justified a visit to Swiss bankers, so the comparison with his one hit wonder will be interesting ... not that he will be too worried about that I imagine.
Glad to see you acknowledge that Kate's 'MADELEINE' was a best seller.

The fact that the Supreme Court has ruled in his favour will undoubtedly invoke an interest from those who aren't already familiar with events. Let's hope its not a "I did, they did" historical reminder which would be ultra boring.

I saw one in a charity shop for 10p, so doesn't look as if much value is put on it. Followers probably have signed copies which might be worth marginally more.
Didn't it make a million pounds
That's reasonable value

Yeah so you can cut and paste from Wikipedia so whats new?. Show us how Sr Amaral's book is libelous under those rules then.
I would refer to Greg le Mond-Lance Armstrong-Sunday Times.
Especially the Lance Armstrong- Sunday Times caper. A salutory lesson in there indeed.

amaral has made an allegation that the mccanns have committed several criminal acts
intent to pervert the course of justice
causing the death of their daughter by giving her calpol which caused her to have an accident
covering up her death
and a multi million pound fraud re the fund
that by definition is libel per se
armstrong I dont believe was accused of any criminal acts and is therfore not relevant
as you have copied and pasted from wiki you are in no position to criticise me

He was good for one book (albeit a not very good book, full of inaccuracies, and so insubstantial there are Mr Men books that take longer to read), there is no indication whatsoever that his subsequent literary efforts have been quite so lucrative or widely read.

I think the problem with Amaral's book is that he mixes fact with opinion which is never a good basis for any book about real life events. If Madeleine was abducted, and it is still a very big 'IF', then only the person or persons involved know the truth of it. If she wasn't abducted and disappeared due to some terrible accident then the mystery could well endure for ever.
My own view is that he was wrong to explore his thesis within "The Truth of the Lie" and should have stayed with the known facts and the evidence. By doing this in a methodical manner he could have left it to readers to come to their own conclusions thus avoiding litigation and a book ban in the UK and elsewhere. That to me would have served him and the truth much better.
There is a much bigger story yet to be told, maybe he intends to touch on that in his new book?

Madeleine McCann's name sells books.
Apparently Amaral’s next book is to mark a return to the genesis of his literary career. It seems his intention is to once more exploit and capitalise on the use of Madeleine McCann's name and her pulling power.
One can only speculate why.
Amaral's first book contains many blatant inaccuracies. There seemed to be an obsession with an opportunistic full frontal assault on the reputation of Madeleine’s parent than much else. Nothing that could be classed as definitive as far as Madeleine herself was concerned except the reinforcement of his opinion of her demise.
Nonetheless that book hit the jackpot for him. No wonder his eagerness to write another best seller.
It must be very enticing indeed to reprise and further reduce Madeleine McCann to the commodity for his personal enrichment by writing another book featured on her. Basically he can say what he likes.
Particularly as he has proved that anything goes when his rights are weighed against the rights of anyone he may choose to injure with his pen.
There might have been supposed a measure of ‘authority’ first time round when he embarked on his literary career resulting from his involvement in the case.
He has no such ‘authority’ now either real or imagined. Nor should he have any knowledge of Madeleine’s case, certainly not enough to author a book, by legitimate means.
Amaral has had as much right or access to inside information about Madeleine's case as any poster to this forum.
That is none.
What exactly is he going to write about if he intends to make further use of Madeleine’s name to further his own ends?
How can anything he has to say about Madeleine’s case have any relevance whatsoever. His proposed book cannot possibly consist of anything of relevance to Madeleine McCann since the case review stage to the present day.
Maybe another hatchet job on her parents?
Time will tell.

Ive never thought of amaral as a perticularly bright man...the fact that he is looking for a UK publisher for his first book confirms this,,,god knows what he intends to put in his second book...I for one cant wait

Perhaps he might take time out to explain why he dismissed information out of hand. He can tell his audience if it received even a cursory glance or was it contemptuously ignored and lost. It would be useful information enable an assessment of what got in the way of information gathering and evaluation. What criteria did Amaral use?
Was it along the lines of if it matches the theory Amaral decided upon on the 4th it must be kosher ... defiled and to be ignored if it runs contrary to his train of thought?

"he dismissed information out of hand" and "chasing a phantom" seem mutually exclusive.
It is my opinion Amaral dismissed information out of hand for reasons best known to him.
It is Amaral's opinion that he was chasing a phantom when supplied with information ~ not dissimilar to Ricardo Paiva's "not relevant" file where he threw information which did not conform to Amaral's theory.
How is such unquestioning certainty arrived at without a deep reason and in what way did that conviction interfere with the conduct of the police inquiry into Madeleine's disappearance?

Maddy was last seen in public at around 5:30 on 3 May and reported to be missing over 4 hours later. 3 adults saw her in that period - her parents and David Payne. These are the first witnesses you question and if they contradict each other then you investigate further.

Even the title of his book is Libellous.
I'd never thought about that before, but I would agree.

Amaral starts his video off based on his book with the words 'let me show you what really happened'.
No one should be able to write a book based on their own theory which has not been proven. He does write as though it is true and that is why so many believe him.
Even now some are saying Amaral will bring justice for Madeleine, they believe that now he has won his libel court case he will get the McCann's arrested, which is absolute rubbish, but these people believe in him. It was a trick used when they were raising money for him, some people saw justice for Madeleine and thought that is why they were giving money so that Amaral would win and get justice [well what they think is justice] for Madeleine in other words arrest the McCann's.
Now he thinks he has a huge following in the UK and so he wants a publisher for his new book, he thinks it will sell very well in the UK.
He is just making money for himself out of Madeleine.

Not only do we enjoy freedom of expression in this country ... we do it within the law which does not allow falsehood or innuendo to destroy the rights of others.
Which is why his first book on Madeleine will not be published here unless all the libels and errors are removed.
Which would leave it about the size of a double sided sheet of A4 paper.
Neither will any reputable publishing house touch his latest effort appropriating Madeleine McCann's name if liable to end up in the libel courts. Without attendant libels not even his fan club will buy it anyway.
If the subject matter is that which been intimated by Amaral friends ... there might actually be a queue at Carter Ruck's door.
In my opinion Amaral has nothing further to add to the sum total of knowledge about Madeleine McCann ... not that it may matter depending on how greedy and vindictive he may be feeling.

I think Kate McCann would be the perfect author for that book. Hire a couple of investigative journos to dig up the dirt (doesn't matter how accurate it is, freedom of expression is all that matters) and get it published in Portugal. I'm sure there must be a few hundred buyers for that?

Why do you think that Kate McCann should be gainfully employed. I never was when my children were small. My husband wouldn't allow it.
But that is another story.
And if you are gainfully employed then what do you give to society? I presume that you get paid for what you do. So who gains?

I have never beaten anyone with unemployment. How would I know, and what business would it be of mine anyway?
In my young day and age, married women with young children didn't work, unless they had a particular skill. But I was an aircraft mechanic, and there weren't any of those jobs going begging. So I stayed home and dragged up the little horror stories.
Kate was a GP, and appears to have worked for two days a week. And then went on to write a book.
Amaral chose to retire and wrote a book. And doesn't seem to have done much else, other than to complain about not having a job of any kind.
Eight years and he has never actually worked at all since.
