A child rapist who was grilled by detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann has died in prison.
Anthony Woodhouse died of natural causes while serving a 17-and-a-half year sentence at Channings Wood jail in Devon, The Sun reports.
A prison spokesman confirmed: “HMP Channings Wood prisoner Anthony Woodhouse died in custody on Wednesday 1 March.
“As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.”

He had spent more than 10 years hiding in Portugal having gone on the run after raping a 14 year-old in Hertfordshire in 1998, who became pregnant.
The Met spoke to him about a cleaning business he was running in the Algarve when Madeleine went missing in 2007.
He was quizzed after it emerged cops wanted to trace six British cleaners who working at the Praia da Luz resort where Madeleine’s family were staying."

Detectives examining the Portuguese files were alarmed that the original inquiry had not traced and interviewed all the staff and holidaymakers who were at the Ocean Club when the three-year-old went missing.
I do wonder since this article came out whether Scotland Yard have managed to trace these people

As the quote is from 'a source' it may not be accurate of course. As I understand it the PJ worked on information given to them by the Ocean Club. They spoke to or, if necessary, interviewed the staff on the lists they were given. I think Leicestershire Police took on the job of finding UK holidaymakers. Didn't they send out questionnaires? I haven't seen anything about holidaymakers from other countries. Were there any?

Tend to agree, there's nothing more suspicious than a reporter or article claiming to have the quantity of information from a source. I have become very wary, or should I say cynical when I see that. I would suggest there is a very good chance that other nationality holiday makers would have been in the resort at the time however I do not recall ever hearing, or seeing any statements after the fact from such tourists.

I don't recall any either, maybe the ones interviewed brought nothing new to the investigation that could be determined. Even the files that were released that had all the collected statements in I can't recall any that were from visiting tourists that stuck as being significant

I couldn't see the review mentioned. It does seem strange there were no statements taken, even from those recorded as being there on 3rd.

Found it now thanks. I wonder if there were 'Thomas Cook' tables too? They are conspicuous by their absence in the files.

When we visited in 2010 there was no problem about our having a meal at the tapas restaurant. No problem paying as outsiders. However the resort seemed very quiet. We were able to wander around the garden area unhindered.
I should add: There was no receptionist at the Tapas Reception. It felt as tho had there been one we would still have been allowed in, so long as we were eating there. As far as the waiters were concerned it seemed the norm for outsider to eat there (if there were empty tables)

It was quiet when the T9 were there too. I wonder why there was all that fuss about booking tables etc? I think the receptionist said in her statement that she finished about 7pm.

Jez and Bridget complained that the T9 had a block booking. Somehow it affected the general fairness of the resort if one lot got preference.

I think it was McKenzie who said he couldn't get a table on 3rd, his wife went for a carry-out. Times had certainly changed by the time Sadie got there.

I believe that two Scots murderers and paedophiles who were also checked out, were running a cleaning business and may have been in the Algarve at the time Madeleine disappeared (they may have refused to speak to SY, if memory serves me well).

I think the police were carrying out due diligence.
Checking out people who might have been overlooked at the time as well as other names which have since come up.
A monumental task whichever way it is viewed.

“We are reviewing a significant number of documents and continue to identify potential lines of inquiry.
“We can confirm that as part of this process we have identified a number of persons of interest, but any suggestion that the Met is asking the Portuguese police to make arrests in connection with this inquiry is entirely inaccurate.
