Thts not an open investigation...you have used the wrong word. Any competent police force will loo at all scenarios and the fact that SY have declared the McCanns not suspects shows that they have looked at them and ruled them out. The PJ ddi not look at all scenarios and wrongly concentrated on the parents

Incorrect as usual.

The PJ looked at abduction and found no evidence.

Incidentally, that's not changed.

It is probably worth remembering that up until last year the search for Madeleine McCann has been financed privately and kept in the public eye by the tenacity of Madeleine’s parents.

The official reopening of Madeleine’s case was achieved only after years of concerted lobbying whoever they could to have an official investigation into her abduction.

The question that springs to mind for me is why victims of a crime have been forced to raise funding to pay for private investigators in a bid to find out what happened to their daughter?

Only an official investigation has any hope of getting to the root of what happened and it is disgraceful that it has taken so long for one to be started.
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

This isn't unique. There was a case of a young woman, murdered in Kenya, whose Father employed private detectives to investigate the crime.
When a crime occurs outside the jurisdiction of the UK, I'm not sure that public money should be used to investigate.
I believe everything. And l believe nothing.
I suspect everyone. And l suspect no one.
I gather the facts, examine the clues... and before   you know it, the case is solved!"

Or maybe not -

Obviously not to the father's satisfaction, as he sold his house and spent his own money in his search for the truth.

There was an official investigation which was shelved despite the fact that the McCann's could have requested it remained live.  It's also worth remembering that certain aspects of their privately funded investigation were withheld from the public, information that could have identified the person they believed to have abducted their child.

Hmmm ~ would that be the well known postage stamp thing?  Seems there was quite a bit of work put in by Helen Monteiro's team to get the reopening of the case off the ground, so possibly not as simple as sticking a stamp on an envelope.

"were withheld from the public" - Were they now?
Remind me, why was it that the Sunday Times issued an apology to the Drs McCann?

I seem to recall there being something about these efits being in the hands of Leicestershire police and the PJ.

One wonders if they ended up in Ricardo Paiva's file which contained articles 'not relevant to the investigation'?

They had a legal right to prevent the case from being shelved, having not exercised said right a reopening was bound to be more involved.

Hmmm~ remind me did the e-fits appear in Kates book along with Tannerman?

I take it you are referring to an article in the Sunday Times - which you appear to accept as completely accurate.    Can I take it therefore that you also accept as completely accurate the other claim made in that same article, i.e. that Martin Smith no longer believes the man he saw carrying a child was Gerry McCann?

Quote from the Times

Smith has since stressed that he does not believe the man he saw was Gerry, and Scotland Yard do not consider this a possibility. Last week the McCanns were told officially by the Portuguese authorities that they are not suspects.

Unquote

The notion that innocence prevails over guilt – when there is no evidence to the contrary – is what separates civilization from barbarism.    Unfortunately, there are remains of barbarism among us.    Until very recently, it headed the PJ in Portimão. I hope he was the last one.
