That would imply the other two couples checking via the front door were being very inconsiderate to their children.

Surely they should also have checked via their patio doors.  After all, it would have saved them perhaps 30 or 40 seconds on each check.

Their patio windows were not illuminated as the Mccanns 5A was .  5A had a street lamp immediately opposite which illuminated the patio area.

The others backed on to a dark unlit alleyway and would have been a burglars paradise from the back because the patio doors were not lockable .... and they were in shadow along a very little used alleyway

The McCanns missed the 'well lit' patio explanation for leaving that door unlocked. An excuse overlooked, perhaps.
