Everything is open for debate.  You say the camera at "Stellar" was pointing inwards, it might be that way now but where was it pointing on the night of the 3rd?
If it was just inwards why did GA regret that the PJ didn't check the CCTV footage early enough.

If there was a camera, would you not check it, just in case it had caught something ?
I believe everything. And l believe nothing.

I gather the facts, examine the clues... and before   you know it, the case is solved!"

Or maybe not -

Did the PJ have the manpower and the desire to look?    But they had to check the tape urgently as after a period the tape was overwritten.  By the time the Smiths had reported their sighting the tape had been overwritten.

The point is it was too late by the time they found out, so we shall never know

But we are trying to answer the hypothetical question "What if the Smith family had come forward on the 4th of May?".

I'd like to know why didn't they?

I'll bet they've regretted coming forward at all ever since.

I would have preferred had you said "I'll bet they've regretted Not coming forward on the 4th ever since".

"I'll bet they've regretted coming forward at all ever since".   Why?

Because Mr Smith took the decision to inject himself and his family in to the situation in an attempt to help. They haven't helped (thus far) and have had innumerable people pouring over every detail of their existence ever since.

Well that was a swathing, zealous and totally unnecessary edit. Thank you, zealous mod, whoever you are!

But he called a family meeting first before anyone from his family did. To me that is controlling.

Some might call it communication

Yet if the McCanns and their friends did the same, it is a "Pact of Silence".
