It's how miscarriages of justice happen when the police think they know but lack the evidence.

The police were convinced Colin Stagg murdered Rachel Nickell but they were proved wrong.

The police were informed by Carl Beech that numerous high profile individuals were part of a paedophile ring and they were daft enough to fall for it hook, line and sinker.
The way you go on it’s as if the police have never solved a single crime successfully.

I think one detective would suffice.
Here you go, do you think it would have been more efficient and professional if thr UK police had just sent one investigator to interview 8 suspects and hold meetings withh the PJ?

When the Pj sent representatives to the UK for meetings did they just send one person?

Even if Operation Grange had had a remit allowing them to truly start from scratch instead of being told what crime they were to investigate they still faced immense difficulties. They had no jurisdiction in Portugal and no right to speak to Portuguese witnesses. They faced a police force who were understandably defensive and a judicial system which they didn't have much understanding of. All of which, imo, seriously damaged any hope of them making headway with the case.

Has it been confirmed that Operation Grange has made no headway then?  What does “making headway” actually mean anyway?  It suggests progress but no resolution, do you know for a fact that they have made no progress?

In my opinion it depends on a person's point of view.

According to A C Mark Rowley they've achieved an awful lot, but as Martin Brunt suggested; "So when you talk of success and progress, it’s really a case of eliminating things? You’re not getting any nearer to finding out what happened?"

”Eliminating things” is progress towards finding out what happened, even if you don’t agree.  So it’s clear from the horse’s mouth, The Met have progressed the case beyond the stage of the original investigation and have made headway.  Next thread!

I don't see a relationship between eliminating things and finding out what happened. This case was unusual because the McCann's appeals were mostly for 'information'. That was such a wide description that the response was huge, and much of it was probably completely useless. The Met, imo, was eliminating things that never should have been included in the files in the first place. Progression in getting rid of chaff, but not in finding out what happened imo.

Everything was a progression from one thing to another.  Culminating in Madeleine's case which the endeavours and determination of her parents had kept going for ten years, being flung wide open as a direct result of  their television appeal on Madeleine's behalf resulting in Brueckner being named to the police.

But you already know all that don't you although you pretend not to 😁
"All I'm going to say is that we've conducted a very serious investigation and there's no indication that Madeleine McCann's parents are connected to her disappearance. On the other hand, we have a lot of evidence pointing out that Christian killed her," Wolter told the "Friday at 9"....

Well that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it but I completely disagree.  What was in the files was nothing to do with the McCanns’ appeal for information for a start.  It sounds to me as if you hold the McCanns responsible for appealing for information (why the sarky inverted commas around information?) as if that was a bad thing.  I suppose as you consider them responsible for hiding their daughter’s body you think they should have shut up and simply waited for the police to assemble a watertight case around them?

Let’s say you have 10 suspects and you manage to eliminate five of them, that’s progress is it not?

That depends on whether those people should have been suspects in the first place. The four arguidos were Operation Grange suspects for some reason, but were never suspected by the PJ.

The police receiving a name is one thing; gathering evidence and charging quite another.

The police received numerous names from Carl Beech and look how that ended up!

How has the MET advanced the case?
Just my opinion of course but Jeremy Bamber is innocent and a couple from UK, unknown to T9, abducted Madeleine McCann - motive unknown.  Was J J murdered as a result of identifying as a goth?
