Why are cadaver dogs ridiculed so much by some people?
« on: April 28, 2013, 06:38:08 PM »
Any dog owner knows that their dog would go and sniff and find a dead body or other unpalatable smells if they came across them

Why have cadaver dogs then if they are rubbish?  Or highly unreliable as Gerry Mccann says. Why not use anyones  dog? Why do police train them, use them, and other police forces who dont have them use them?

There mustbe  some reason these dogs are superior to any domestic dog

No-one is ridiculing them. We are merely pointing out knowledge that is available to decide whether or not they are accurate.

We do KNOW that cadaver dogs alert to blood alone when cadaver is absent completely.

Oh dear, anthropomorphism writ large

dogs are animals - they react instinctively

They CAN be manipulated - that's why dogs are man's best friend - they want to please their owner/the alpha male

Couldn't do that with cats - ask Siegfried and Roy

I have no problem with working dogs whatsoever

I do have an issue with the handlers - making thousands out of their alerts - that's a mighty motivational pull

Did Grime ever hand the 90k back to police after his dogs found a piece of coconut shell?????

Dogs alert to what's put in front of them - not more or less - they don't don lab coats and examine the material
they alerted to - scientifically.

That's the nub of it - unless one is still caught up in the 70s - when Lassie's barking - made the listener interpret it as 'Billie Joe has fallen down the mineshaft - quick - help!!!!!'

Angelo related them to a circus act

What about all the times the dogs failed to detect anything when there was in fact something to find?  Are these episodes classified as fools errands or are they conveniently overlooked?   Let's face it a spaniel's hooter and what it can achieve is not an accurate science and more akin to a circus act.

As to whether they are accurate, this has been  established, they are are accurate to a high percentage

IMO Edidie was very accurate in flat 5a,and seeing as no one is reported to have died there, I would like to know what he was alerting to and it is astronomically improbable or just *bad luck* that he was alerting to innocent things ONLY there and nowhere else, such as urine, semen, bad breath, sweat, toenails, rotting teeth, abortions and all the other things people he he could have been alerting to ONLY in a missing childs house but nowhere else, erm i rest my case there exactly for now

There was only one set of indications for cadaver odor in 5a. This has a 1 in 5 possibility of being an error and no cadaver odor was ever present.

Evidence at 80% validity is not convincing.

Not sure it's fair to say we ridicule cadaver dogs.  For example, it appears as if Eddie's alert in the Attracta Haron investigation cracked that case and put a particularly vicious and nasty murderer behind bars.

I think our beef is more with the way dogs, sometimes, are handled.

Whatever ferryman you should not have any beef with with any dog handler, they are there to help solve cases, why would you have a beef with them? Its an oxymoron

That's Pollyanna land

When dogs (and their handlers) are getting paid massive amounts - they need to find 'stuff'

Whilst you are mithering about the cuteness of dogs

Grime is sipping a cheeky pinot noir somewhere in Spain

laughing at your naivety

That is quite a feat. Even while reading complex material, it is known that Gazelles are rather can maintain decent speeds when chased, so to catch one is very commendable. Well done.

Could you please list these multiple alerts to cadaver odour in the apartment? I certainly don't know what they are.

There was certainly one alert by the wardrobe which Grime said may not be the accurate position of the cadaver but could be sited there due to some kind of air movements.

What others are you referring to?

you wouldn't believe what happened when I tossed a Rubick's cube to the giraffes

that was whilst the capuchine

monkeys did the Sunday Times crossword for me

and the rhino recited Chaucer

Woburn Safari Park - it blows one's mind

I'm balanced on my head on a beam 6 inches wide suspended between the top of the Empire State Building and the next skyscraper, simultaneously juggling half-a-dozen tennis balls with my feet and reading all this, and not believing a word ....
