It's May and her 10th birthday. Space will have been reserved in press calendars, particularly in the tabloids. They've got to fill it up with something.

Some of these leads haven't been followed through to elimination. Even your average hack can work that out.

Yes, I understand that there are times when we can expect more than usual press coverage  (  Madeleine's birthday for instance )

The point I am making,  though,  is that the old stories being rehashed at the moment have a common theme   ...  they are being 'spun'  to suggest Scotland Yard have uncovered new leads that where previously unknown

This particular story  ( quoted in the OP )   has been confirmed by a source 'close to the McCanns'  as being 'new' information that they considered a  'development'

The reader is left with the impression that Scotland Yard have uncovered evidence that the McCanns were previously unaware of  ...  when, in reality, they  ( and we )  have been aware of this information for years

ask the papers involved why they do it.

Is that difficult for you to understand?

I look forward to your report back

I am more interested in why a  'source close to the McCanns'  has briefed this newspaper and given the impression that  information that has been in the public domain for years has only now been uncovered by Scotland Yard  ...  and that the McCanns had been previously unaware of it

you really don't have a clue do you.

No idea. It wouldn't be the first time that "sources" have been invented... and it doesn't take much to check through a few files. There may not have been anything new at all.

I really don't think  ( post Leveson )  that newspapers would  'invent'  sources and claim they were  'close to the McCanns'   (  I mean, how could they support that if challenged by the McCanns and Carter Ruck ? )

I am inclined to think the  'source close to McCanns'   really  did    give this  ( old, dressed up as new )  information to the newspaper

...  what baffles me is  why  they did

I don't believe this 'source' ever existed.  It's a ploy universally used by newspapers when they want to print an article which they know will sell newspapers - but have no legitimate source to attach it to.    They've been doing it for years.    Whenever I read... ''a source close too...''  I know to treat what comes next with a very large pinch of salt.

The notion that innocence prevails over guilt – when there is no evidence to the contrary – is what separates civilization from barbarism.    Unfortunately, there are remains of barbarism among us.    Until very recently, it headed the PJ in Portimão. I hope he was the last one.

Exactly what I do too, I look at the source they claim, there's a vast difference between quoting documented sources & named people from dragging up the old "sources close to".

This board reinstated
