So how do you think Gerry got hold of Omeprazole without consulting his doctor ?

OP!

The possible use of a sedative has been mentioned in the case several times including with particular reference being made to Calpol.

Indeed, it is part of Gonçalo Amaral's claim that a sedative played some part in what he alleges was Madeleine's death.

Yes, only Calpol (due to a misunderstanding by Amaral). The rest is pure speculation - no sedatives were ever found anywhere in the McCanns' possession inside the apartment.

Where did this Calpol saga originate (I don't mean the interview with Kate's dad that ended up in tabloids  stating the opposite of what he'd said).

Apologies I meant two courses of 28 tablets at a time. Long term usage of Omperazole is monitored by doctor.

ETA 'never had assisted Gerry, '. I would think signing repeat prescriptions would be included in 'assisting' a patient.

It doesn't need to be monitored. he knows himself if any changes. Which a nurse would deal with, if needed.
Well looks like our doc is one in a million. He only signs the prescription, reception print them off.

It's an intriguing question.

The subject surfaced because the McCanns raised it (in telling the PJ, frankly, that they had it with them on holiday).

Then Amaral made a reference in his book to "calpol night" which (from memory) he said simply had been on the market  (sic) in recent years.

But it was Morais in one of her blogs who made all the running with calpol night.

All long term drug use is monitored and if there were changes it certainly wouldn't be dealt with by a practice nurse.

Besides if his doctor was treating Gerry for any kind of illness, even only by writing prescriptions, he would have said so in his statement.

From his book.

One of the police officers who went to the McCanns' home in England, reported that a medical monitoring chart for Madeleine was posted in the kitchen. This referred to her sleep problems and made clear that she was waking several times in the night. The paternal grandfather stated that Kate gave the little girl - and also the twins - Calpol, a medication designed to facilitate falling asleep. That seems to be a common practice in Great Britain; they even talk about a "Calpol generation." In recent years, the possible presence of an antihistamine with sedative effects in Calpol has aroused great controversy. Recently, the same laboratory put Calpol Night on the market, whose ingredients clearly list that it contains an antihistamine.

That wording was, probably deliberately, used so as to mislead the unwary reader into supposing the drug was on the market at the time of the holiday

That is a falsehood (at best); a lie (at worst).

Although (possibly) something lost in translation (where the hell is Carana when you need her) ...

Not at our practice, unless urgent! You can buy omeprazole over the counter at pharmacies!

Can I buy proton pump inhibitors?
Most of these medicines are prescription only. You can buy omeprazole over the counter at pharmacies. However, if you need to use this medicine for more than four weeks you should consult your doctor.

But you can buy omeprazole over the counter at pharmacies. You can buy it as omeprazole, or by the brand name Zanprol. Rabeprazole (Pariet) can also be bought over the counter.

See how Amaral talks about the chart that Madeleine had for her sleeping.    Then goes on to say that Kate give Madeleine Calpol.

If Kate give Madeleine Calpol to help her sleep [which it doesn't]   then there would be no need for a chart.

The way he introduces the Calpol into the paragraph along side Madeleine and her sleep,   sounds as though Kate give Madeleine Calpol to stop her waking up.

In actual fact the Grandfather [correct me if I am wrong]   actually said  he doesn't remember Kate giving Madeleine any drugs except for Calpol.   I don't think he said 'at night to help her sleep'  did he?

You're quite right, Lace, he never did.  That confusion arose because a journalist added his own words in brackets of a direct quote of Mr Healey (sic) to help her [madeleine] sleep.

Those words were never said by Mr Healey.
