It sounds to me as though someone might have messed with his statement.  It wouldn't be the first time or the last time.

What statement ?

His first statement.

AFAIAA there is no 'first' statement, simply newspaper reports. Care to point me in the right direction Eleanor ?

You mean The PJ didn't include it in The Files?  Oh My.

So there seems to have been no statement to mess with, doesn't there Eleanor ? Just continually changing media reports which Clarence Mitchell seems to have change his reaction to to accommodate.

I find it a trifle worrying that The PJ ignored his report.  Although I can't imagine why I should be surprised.  They appear to have done quite a lot of that.
They ignored what could have been a valuable lead while spreading downright lies all over The Tabloids.
And some people wonder why others think that the investigation was a cock up from day one.

Did he make a report or did he simply cut out the middleman and go straight to the tabloids ?

He says that he told The PJ.  Why would he not have done?  If he didn't tell The PJ, would not that have been Obstructing the Course of Justice which is punishable By Law?

Nope. Leaving aside the fact that Portugal has a vastly different judicial system, not even under English law would Mr Castela have committed an offence by not reporting the incident to the police.

But he says he did.  Are you saying that he was lying?  And why would he not have reported it?

Perhaps because it was a load of old cobblers which only seems to have come to light at the beginning of 2008 IIRC.

I think that is for Scotland Yard and Prosecutors in Portugal to decide.  He will no doubt be interviewed now.  Hardly the actions of a liar.

And very hard to prove to be a lie at this juncture, a fact, I'm sure, mr Castela has thought about carefully.

Well someone's lying.

While the secrecy of justice law continues to constrain any official clarification about the Madeleine Case, unofficial PJ sources were quoted by the Portuguese-language press as confirming the existence of António Cardoso’s report in the case files.
