I find it hard to believe that anyone abducting / disposing of a child would wander round with them in their arms. I think it's just some holidaymaker with their kid.

I think it makes a mockery of a planned abduction. We have a suspiciously opened door at 9:05 which is then closed, it's open again at 9:30 when MO checks (although that seems to have been dropped from the official time line now) it's open at 10:00 when Kate returns and so is the window, at about the same time this new abductor is strolling down the road with his victim not ten minutes away.

Why all the time in the apartment?

Why no car?

Why the opened window?

Why hasn't this e-fit been made public before?

The account of Mr Smith, who provided details for one of the e-fits, has been called into question because he initially told investigators the suspect walked and looked like Madeleine’s father Gerry McCann. But British police say they are certain Mr McCann had absolutely nothing to do with his daughter’s disappearance.

This sighting implies something very sinister,
60 to 80% sure it was Gerry McCann with a little girl in his arms,
I watched a sky documentary earlier & it seemed to me like they were itching to put that full account on air.

Whilst Martin Smith (just one of the family) thought it might have been Gerry McCann the other witnesses who were more familiar with the man were sure that he was present elsewhere. Hardly surprising that the police choose on balance to believe the other witnesses.

Nor, I suspect, is it unusual for people to think they have seen someone when their image has been broadcast non-stop on the TV for weeks and months to think they may have seen that person as part of their statement.

It very well could be. But it is absolutely correct for SY to ask for this person either to come forward and eliminate himself or for others to suggest who it might be so that he can be eliminated. DCI Redwood was very explicit in stating that it may be such a person.

It can also have exactly the opposite effect.

Why are you spreading misinformation gilet ? Both Martin Smith and his wife said with some degree of certainty that the man they saw with the child was Gerry McCann and SY viewed them as credible witnesses.

I will agree with you that the weight of the other witnesses placing Gerry at the tapas table was compelling and hard for the PJ to refute however each one of those witnesses was closely linked to the McCanns so by no stretch of the imagination could be called independent.

It is absolutely true but if you are disputing my post be so good as to point out which part you don't agree with ?

Wouldn't it be more obvious to abduct/dispose of a child carrying a holdall ?

This is totally true, and after so many years you SHOULD know it.

Martin Smith may have been 60%-80% sure (which isn't really THAT sure is it?) that it might have been Gerry, but other members of the family were 100% sure that it wasn't Gerry.   So on the balance of percentages who is more likely to be right?  Not Martin Smith IMO.
The notion that innocence prevails over guilt – when there is no evidence to the contrary – is what separates civilization from barbarism.    Unfortunately, there are remains of barbarism among us.    Until very recently, it headed the PJ in Portimão. I hope he was the last one.
