If Martin Smith goes on record to say he still suspects the McCanns, I will eat humble pie.

Not until ....

I will stay with his last verified statement thank you. I know what he said, I've read his words and I've seen no direct quote changing what he said.

What document is available to see where Mr Smith retracted his statement? He never claimed he suspected the McCanns of anything did he? As far as this has been documented- He claimed he was 60/80% sure the person he saw  in PDL, carrying a child, was similar to the  person carrying a child from the plane on TV- who happened to be Gerry. The efit looks like Gerry, but it also looks like another 'person of interest' IMO. So, stop putting your words into Mr Smiths statement. He never made any accusations at anyone.

So you don't believe that people (honestly, and from positions of integrity) change their positions to reflect the changing status of a dynamic and fast-moving sequence of events such as a police enquiry?

Why is that?

He believed Gerry was the man he saw carrying a child.  If that belief had been substantiated Gerry would be languishing in a Portuguese jail for crimes against his daughter, very likely, also, Kate.

All the indicators are that Mr Smith himself has long since recanted of that view.

You mean if this was found to tie in with other independant witness statements and an accurate timeline analysed then yes he would have been arrested and questioned. You have a problem with that? you don't think Mr Martin should have mentioned this to the police? You don't think the parents should have been bothered by the police with questions? Oh ok.

The rotting in jail would only happen if they were found guilty...

Why is that?

Why do people a) tell me what I think and then b) ask me why I think it when I never said any such thing in the first place?

People can indeed change their positions. There is, however, nothing which supports your assertion that Mr Smith did so.

If you prefer beliefs that fly in the face of common sense and logical analysis, that is your prerogative.

I was giving you a bit more credit than that ....

With all due respect your approval is not something I need.

There is no verifiable evidence that Martin Smith decided that his opinion as given in his statement of 30th January 2008 was a mistake. I will not be replying to any more of your posts on the matter as you clearly cannot produce anything to back up your beliefs, so I'm wasting no more time engaging with you.

I'm just trying to keep your feet on the ground. Stating conjecture as fact just leads to false conclusions. Stick to things you know you can produce cites for. You are desperately trying to make people believe Martin Smith was mistaken, but you can't. He never said he changed his mind. he never said he was mistaken when he identified Gerry McCann.

Erm... Martin never said he'd identified Gerry in the first place.

He did, he said he was 60-80% sure it was him ergo identifying him...??? That's all

Ps and his wife agreed with him although other family members didn't on the x y z of whatever was under discussion

Quote
This weekend, Mr Smith's wife Mary told the Mail on Sunday her husband had no regrets about coming forward.

He [Martin] doesn't want to talk, said Mrs Smith. He said what he had to say. I was with him [that night]. We saw a man carrying a child and that's all we know. We told them all that and that's it.

''The man he saw had the same stature as Gerry McCann. We felt we had to help. We're happy we did. We reported exactly what we saw.

"We only did what we thought was right for a missing girl and our hearts are breaking for her parents, as it would be if it were one of ours.

''I feel very much for them [the McCanns]. I have six grandchildren of my own and six children of my own.

"The poor McCann family must be heartbroken.''

Odd things to say for a couple who doubt the innocence of the MCanns ....

he said he did not get a good look at his face...his 60 to 80%   statement is his totally useless opinion
