This web site suggests that 48 and 72 hour time limits are aimed at, but refrigeration is possible with an exception guaranteed. The clock starts clicking at different times:

"According to Portuguese law, if the deceased is to remain within Portugal then a corpse must be buried or cremated 72 hours after the verification of death or 48 hours if there has been a medico-legal autopsy performed.

If these deadlines are unable to be abided by, it is necessary that evidence is provided to confirm that the body is being kept in a cold storage facility."

Here is a guide to death in Portugal.

Reports need to be made within 48 hours:

"Reporting the Death
The death of an individual which occurs on Portuguese territory must be reported within two days (48 hours) at the Civil Registry Office (Conservatória de Civil Registo) in the district where the death occurred."

which already directly contradicts your suggestion that burial or cremation must be within 24 hours.

and this seems to give quite some time to arrange a burial or cremation with no sign of a 24 hour limit.

"Funeral Arrangements
The burial or cremation can only take place once the death has been reported.

Burial rights in Portugal are only valid for a limited amount of time. After this time the burial rights have to be renewed or the Portuguese authorities reclaim the grave."

The last link you cited was an ex-pat information website, AngloInfo,  the hint is in the word Anglo, cretin !

Find a cite for burial within 24 hours. You cannot because it is untrue.

How can there be burial within 24 hours when you are allowed 48 hours to report a deatrh and have to report a death before burial. Try using logic.

Vol. IX p. 2480
 EVRD

'Eddie' The Enhanced Victim Recovery Dog (E.V.R.D.) will search for and locate human remains and body fluids including blood in any environment or terrain. The initial training of the dog was conducted using human blood and stil born decomposing piglets. The importance of this is that the dog is introduced to the scent of a decomposing body NOT FOODSTUFF. This ensures that the dog disregards the 'bacon sandwich' and 'kebab' etc that is ever present in the background environment. Therefore the dog would remain efficient searching for a cadaver in a café where the clientele were sat eating bacon sandwiches. He has additionally trained exclusively using human remains in the U.S.A. in association with the F.B.I. The enhanced training of the dog has also involved the use of collection of 'cadaver scent' odor from human corpses using remote technical equipment which does not contact the subject. This method is comparable to the simulation of cross contamination. It does however differ in that the remote scent samples recovery does not involve subject matter

'Eddie will search for and   locate human remains and body fluid,  including blood'

Any idea what the other body fluids are?

No, you've provided links to websites that advise FOREIGN NATIONALS on the procedures regarding death and burial in Portugal for FOREIGN NATIONALS not with regard to the same procedures for Portuguese nationals !

Have just phoned the consular section of the Portuguese Embassy in London. They say that registration of death is required within 48 hours of discovery and on registration a permit to bury or cremate is issued which is normally of two weeks duration. Should the funeral not be arranged in this time, extensions may be granted by application to the local administrative offices.

Now perhaps Anne can give her cite (not given yet) for compulsory burial within 24 hours which is a fiction of hers.

In Portugal corpses are exposed in churches..

But only in the first 24 hours after death. They must move quickly!

And did said consular employee provide you the relevant location in the Portuguese constitution for that assertion ?

It is in the Administrative Law, not in the Constitution. It is NOT in the Constitution.

Anne is quite right in what she says.  It is normal practice to have burials in Portugal and Spain within 24 hours.  There can be exceptions where a family can afford to have the body embalmed or refrigerated.  The ordinary person cannot afford these procedures and since a body can deteriorate very quickly in the heat they are entombed or cremated asap.

A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.
Indeed, the truth never changes with the passage of time.

Doesn't affect the attendance of police at death scenes

Anne said "by law" so she was in fact wrong...

It is a tenet of Islam that the dead should be buried in 24 hours.

That is because many Islamic countries are very hot, and (at least in the days before refrigeration) if you left it longer, you'd get a nasty smell.

You make me laugh ! Yes, the law is like this and the reason is sanitary. In Summer in some parts of Portugal temperature goes over 108° Fahrenheit.

She did not say that it was normal practice. She said it was a legal requirement.

Shevstated this to try to explain why the police could not transfer cadaver door.

She was in error or lying.

It is not a requirement of the law, only a figment of her imagination.
