I have the perfect example of this. I take my niece to school 4 days a week. Her school is a 5 minute walk from my house, however I also take my son to school, his is a ten minute drive away. He starts school at 8:30, she starts school at 9. I could leave my niece in the house, drive to my sons school and get home in time to walk her in, but I insist that she comes with us. She's ten by the way.
The chances of a ten year old coming to harm alone in a house for twenty minutes are so much smaller than a car crash, but I can't leave her.
Even when we are aware of what we're doing, we're still controlled by our fears.
I dont think its necessarily fear that makes you do that.
Its responsibility isnt it? Your responsible for her welfare and to knowingly leave her on her own even for 10 minutes would not sit right in your head.
I was never fearful of my children being abducted but I was aware of all the dangers they faced in the big wide world.
Even in the house my daughter at about 10 managed to break her arm getting caught in the sheets in her bunk bed when she was messing about.
Accidents happen even when we are careful, but no I never feared my children would be taken from me by a stranger. Mind you I never left them in a situation this could happen anyway.
I was young when the Moors murders happened, and possibly this stuck in my head.
I lived abroad when my children were young, and never had a minute when I felt we were not safe.
I think to leave children in an apartment on their own is irresponsible, not because of the threat of abduction, but so many things can happen to them. For example one of the twins might have woken and tried to climb out of the travel cot, and fell out hitting their head hard on the floor.....a child could go off looking for mummy and daddy and if the access is available either climb over and fall over a childs gate onto hard concrete steps or fall over a balustrade...or get run over by a car...
No not abduction, but accident is why I would never leave them alone. Even when you are in the house they can get hurt they move so fast and being a parent you have to keep your eye on the ball constantly, just one lapse is all it takes, as I nearly found to our cost.
