Did Russell O'Brien have access to a car?
« on: January 04, 2014, 05:55:18 PM »
In his book "Truth of the lie", Gonçalo Amaral claims that one of the cars which the dogs were allowed to inspect in the underground car park may had been used by one of the tapas-9, Russell O'Brien.  The exact quote is...

To be examined are those of Robert Murat, Michaela, Sergey Malinka, Luiz Antonio, the McCann couple, and one that Russell O'Brien may have used.

My question is, surely it was known whether or not Mr O'Brien had access to a car by that stage?
Why was this issue still a 'may have used'?   Surely he did or he didn't, it wasn't a grey area or was it?

A malicious prosecution for a crime which never existed. An exposé of egregious malfeasance by public officials.
Indeed, the truth never changes with the passage of time.

To me, 'may have used' suggests that he might have borrowed it from someone, rather than hired one, but it was said at the time that none of the group had access to vehicles.

Perhaps the police thought there was a possibility that Russell Obrien had used the car that had been hired by his friends, the Gorrods

James and Charlotte Gorrod live just two minutes away from Obrien and Jane Tanner in Exeter,  and are friends of theirs

They were in PDL  at the time of Madeleine's disappearance

This is the same Russell who was missing from the tapas for some considerable time for which he has no alibi and whose partner Jane Tanner was the only person to have claimed to have seen a man carrying a child while walking away from the apartment block.  Worse still, she claims to have walked past Gerry and Jez yet they never saw her and to add insult to injury she couldn't even remember which side of the street they were on.  hmm...

Then conveniently we have O'Brien arrive back just minutes before it is discovered that Madeleine is missing.

"We went to Manchester and stayed at a friends house before catching the first flight of the morning, on Saturday 5th May 2007. We arrived in Portugal on Saturday morning, where a friend lent us a car to use and we went to Praia da Luz." (Patricia Cameron)

Who was this friend and car details?
Smithman carrying a child in his arms checked his watch after passing the Smith family and the time was 10:03. Both are still unidentified 10 years later.

Not so convenient really. No sooner had he sat down to  his delayed meal than all hell let loose. Did that poor man ever get anything to eat that night?

In his second interview in Portugal, Russell stated that the entire group walked everywhere and did not have access to any vehicle so the question stands as to why Amaral thought he had access to a vehicle and moreover was able to bring it for testing.  Has anyone seen any reference in the files to this?

I suppose disposing of the body of a dead little girl would be sure to give you an appetite.   Not.

If that is what is being suggested - then it's just another barmy conspiracy theory in the making IMO.
The notion that innocence prevails over guilt – when there is no evidence to the contrary – is what separates civilization from barbarism.    Unfortunately, there are remains of barbarism among us.    Until very recently, it headed the PJ in Portimão. I hope he was the last one.

Icab mentioned the most likely reason...they were friends with the Gorrods who were the same week, ey met up with them on the Monday and had other plans IIRC, they had a hire car....it was mentioned in Mark Harrisons report / recommendations that apartments and any hired vehicles by mccanns and friends be searched...Jane mentioned the gorrods had a hire car so I guess they added that in
